Just being a support for the student in question. Now, obviously, the first idea to jump to there is academically, and this is super important, of course, but also school is a naturally difficult time for a lot of students for a large variety of reasons, and even if the tutor nor student realize it, being there to help dealing with it is a massive…

To not show them the answer straight away. Push the student to understand what they are doing, and use the knowledge that they have learnt to solve the problem. There is no point in getting a question wrong, looking at the answer and saying 'I will do that next time'. It is essential that they can do the questions individually and confidently. I…

I believe that boosts a student's confidence in the school environment as they are receiving additional help from outside. This allows them to enjoy their time at school and develop positive learning habits. All of these effects will result in better grades for a student, once again fostering more confidence, and cycling back to better grades. I…

The most important role a tutor can play is showing constant and unconditional support for their student. This is something I've learned from the example of my previous tutor who answered almost every email or text message within the hour within reason. I believe showing this constant support allows the student to trust us as tutors and react more…

I think the most important thing a tutor should do is educate student such that they enjoy learning new content. To do this, a tutor must deliver his knowledge in an engaging, enthusiastic way. It is also important for a tutor to make sure that every student not only learnt and understand knowledge, but to master the skills related to the topic.…

Being able to properly connect with the student is important in building trust so that the student is open and honest about their ability and will ask questions when they don't understand new or existing concepts. Being both supportive and empathetic are important. Encouraging a student and not making a huge deal about mistakes while congratulating correct responses builds a student's self-confidence which makes them perform better overall and develop a liking for the subject. My son understood exactly what Margaret taught him the other day, with which he was having a lot of problems with.
Rebecca, Georges Hall

Inside Georges HallTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Sam revised standard mathematics topics including surface area and indices, with targeted practice on algebraic equations.

Another Year 11, Mia, worked through questions involving simple and compound interest as well as methods for rearranging formulae to isolate a specific variable.

For primary support, Year 4 student Jay focused on maths concepts like interpreting time phrases and reading analogue clocks, alongside building his English vocabulary by creating word lists with definitions and example sentences.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer presentation—brackets were often missed when multiplying negatives, which led to sign errors ("the presentation of answers needed improvement so as to be mathematically correct").

In Year 10 financial maths, a tendency emerged to attempt annuity problems before planning the approach, resulting in confusion about which formulas applied.

Meanwhile, a primary student found adding mixed numeral fractions difficult at first and hesitated to show working; only after guided practice did confidence grow.

In all cases, moments of hesitation or skipped steps made it harder to catch small mistakes early.

Recent Achievements

One Georges Hall tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now working through factorisation and expansion questions right after a single demonstration, rarely needing extra help.

In Year 9, another student has begun asking clarifying questions when stuck—previously she would stay silent or guess—and recently solved percentage error and surface area problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school made a noticeable shift from struggling with decimals to answering decimal addition questions independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Georges River Grammar.
