I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

I realize tutoring is not just about being a private teacher who delivers knowledge outside of school. It is also about being a mentor, a facilitator, a friend who can help learners grow and develop good habits in order to have the best performance in learning. Besides, the tutor is the one who understand the student' strengths and weaknesses in…

I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them and notice. Students pay more attention and are willing to learn when they feel that their opinions are heard and acknowledged. I am an extremely patient person. I can work with each student as an individual and let them grow and work at their own pace. I am also an…

Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

Inside GilbertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Chloe worked on telling time and practiced adding and subtracting using simple word problems.

In Year 9, Sam tackled quadratic equations and solved related questions in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on the unit circle—reviewing key values—and also went through specific exam paper questions to build confidence with trigonometry concepts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student's lesson showed a pattern of relying too much on memory rather than setting out full working—"needs to make sure she slows down and writes out every step of the equation." This often led to confusion with formulae and mistakes during tests.

A Year 8 student came to lessons without organizing past queries or unfinished assignments, meaning valuable session time was spent searching for problems instead of building understanding.

In Year 4 maths, a student repeatedly counted on fingers instead of recalling times tables, slowing progress when tackling mixed multiplication tasks in class.

Recent Achievements

A Gilberton tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to stay silent when confused now starts sessions by sharing difficulties, leading to real discussions and faster problem-solving together.

In Year 11 maths, one student was able to work through complex derivatives independently after just a few reminders about logarithm laws—previously, he needed step-by-step guidance for every question.

Meanwhile, a younger student who had struggled with times tables now insists on trying problems unaided and gets nearly all of them correct before asking for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wilderness School.
