I consider the following as critical things a tutor can do for a student: - Ability to empathise with the student. This helps with connecting with the students, and creates a safe learning space for them - Ability to listen. In the classroom settings, some teachers are unable to connect with all the students due to the large number and rigid…

Be approachable such that they are able to ask you questions and feel comfortable rather than stressed out like a teacher may make them at school. I’m an emotionally intelligent person which allows myself to be approachable, allowing the student to come forth with questions and queries. Additionally, I have knowledge in a wide range of…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to make learning an excitement rather something a series of hurdles that they must overcome each year. The attitude toward learning and certain subjects can be changed with the correct about of support and encouragement. My strengths as a tutor is that I enjoy a challenge and understand…

As a tutor I believe it is very important to be able to communicate well with your student so the lessons you try and teach are undrstood. It is also very important to develop a good positive relationship as I believe that providing a good learning environment goes a long way in helping the students with their learning. A definite strength that I…

This ensures the student is able to get the most out of the session and tutors are able to address such difficulties making, creating a conducive learning environment.…

The most important thing I would say, would be to cater to each student's unique method of learning. There are many ways of digesting information and of understanding, many students struggle in school because they are forced to fit into only one or two ways of studying and learning, which may not be the most helpful for them. I as a tutor, pay…

Listen to them, their needs, their wants, their understanding. A lot of the time they don’t feel comfortable speaking up in class or school, and it’s important for this to be their one space to ask as many questions or say whatever they need about the subject. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only help them understand topics, but allow the student to gain insight from the tutor's own knowledge of how assignments and school in general functions. It would be a waste for me to not use my experience in VCE, high school and primary school in helping my students learn how…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is instil confidence in the student. One thing I have observed is, even if you teach a child the entire syllabus to the best of your abilities, they won't perform well in an examination if they don't have the self confidence. I always believe it's best to reassure a student that they know what…

I think listening is the most important thing that anyone can do. Jumping to conclusions doesn't help anyone, it only creates more misunderstanding. Really, actively listening to what the student is trying to say and get across can help both of you to understand each other and make the experience better for both of us. One of my strengths is my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make concepts clear, and encourage independent thinking. Communication. Being able to answer questions a student may have, on top of that a student being able to tell their tutor they aren't keeping up with the lesson, or their mind's not in a good learning space is really important Asking questions of the student to understand their knowledge and where they're at with a given…

Allowing them to take an initial step to understanding by themselves, and when they need help, guide them to the right path without completely providing the whole answer. This encourages critical thinking amongst students and shows them that they are capable enough to learn these hard concepts that they may be dealing with. Ultimately, teaching…

Inside Glen HuntlyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Henry worked on converting mixed fractions to improper fractions and practiced adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions with different denominators.

In Year 8, Sarah focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and collecting like terms using practice questions from her textbook.

For Year 10, Michael tackled quadratic equations from past tests as well as set notation in its various forms, including finding minimum points of graphs through worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to keep track of negative signs when adding and subtracting fractions, with one tutor noting, "she needs to look at the signs in front of the term… then subtract or add accordingly."

In Year 10, forgetting to write units and not double-checking data led to errors in measurement and statistics questions.

A Year 11 student avoided attempting complex polynomial division without notes—hesitation here slowed progress during independent tasks.

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly skipped re-reading worded problems fully, missing key details and needing extra explanation before proceeding with calculus applications.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Huntly tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Sienna, used to wait for hints before attempting tricky calculus problems, but in their latest session she worked through finding derivatives from first principles mostly on her own and asked targeted questions only when really stuck.

Meanwhile, Lily in Year 7 had previously struggled to spot mistakes in her test answers, but after some guided practice she now independently reviews her work and corrects errors without prompting.

In another recent session, Eve (Year 10) was able to solve exponential equations that had caused trouble in earlier homework attempts and finished the whole set without needing step-by-step guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Eira College.
