A tutor should first be the student's friend. We should build camaraderie towards our students so that they will be willing to listen to us, which will give the teachers easier time throughout the sessions. Tutors should also give their best to teach their students and give quality education. They should ensure the students learn the lessons…

Patient. Patience is key when it comes to teaching younger people something new, especially if they are not good at it. A good tutor will always be patients and find multiple action plans for their students to achieve the end result. Brush over familiar concepts of study, and go into detail with concepts that are a little more difficult to understand. A tutor should always be patient as the student is already frustrated as they do not understand what they are learning to begin with, and i can say with confidence i am very patient. Most importantly i will boost my student's…

By creating a comfortable environment and celebrating small successes, a tutor can help boost a student’s confidence, motivation, and love for learning.…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. Sometimes they know more than they think—they just need someone to encourage them and show them they’re capable. And remind students that learning is a process. A tutor should focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate the small wins along the…

Being there for a student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Whilst tutors are there to help guide a student's learning progress, they should also present themselves as a supportive friend. The relationship between a student and tutor is important and aspects like giving general advice, and helping students during…

The tutor must be able to understand how the student learns and should be able to change their teaching style according to their student. In addition, a tutor must have a strong knowledge of the concepts and be willing to constantly improve themselves as the curriculum and the technology used in school changes. Being patient is also a crucial…

As mentioned, creating an alternate method for rote learning is to let the concept sink in through simple derivations and i have used it in my past so i'd love to pass it on to my students. For being a mathematics tutor, i believe the most important element is to not just bombard students with formulas but to explain it to them where they came…

The most important thing for a tutor is to inspire students to learn, and develop their own passion for learning. Learning should not be seen as a criteria for entries to tertiary institutes. Most of the time, people learn for the marks. While an A+ or that 50 raw is satisfying, it may not be the best for the student in the long run. I want my…

Local Reviews

Thanh has increased my daughter's confidence in her maths ability. She has a no nonsense but fun approach that keeps a teenager positive about continuing tutoring. My daughter likes that Thanh has different methods of teaching concepts that make more sense to her. And best of all she is positive about my daughters progress.

Inside Glen WaverleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Kye worked on long multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers (including zeroes) and was introduced to division using visual strategies.

Year 7 student Elle focused on probability concepts, tackling practice questions involving multiple events and converting fractions to decimals as part of test preparation.

For Year 8, revision for Kye included rearranging algebraic equations and reviewing fundamental skills in bracket multiplication, helping consolidate methods for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to bring past tests for review, which meant missed chances to clarify recurring mistakes—"he couldn't check which algebra steps were lost in the test."

In Year 8 maths, forgetting to attempt set homework limited practice with foundational topics like BEDMAS and basic equations.

One Year 6 student often tried questions in their head without showing working; this hid errors when tackling area problems.

Across both junior and senior years, not recording confusing questions during school videos led to gaps that lingered into lessons.

Without these process tweaks, confusion quietly accumulates between sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Waverley tutor noticed some great changes lately. Kye, a high school student, recently brought home his data test with 93%—a big leap after earlier trouble remembering statistics concepts, and he now checks his notes to solve new problems without prompting.

Elle, also in high school, picked up algebraic angle questions much faster than before; she's started explaining her working out aloud rather than guessing quietly.

Meanwhile, Trishelle (primary) has begun completing all her homework each week on her own initiative and points out exactly which maths areas still worry her before starting new tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Waverley Secondary College.
