I believe that the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is make them feel welcome and build their confidence by acknowledging their progress no matter how small it is. It is also crucial for a tutor to recognize that everyone learns differently and adapt their teaching styles accordingly. Having finished high school just…

As a chemistry tutor it is crucial to deeply understand the ambitions and goals of each student; their current level, and where they want to end up or what they want to achieve. This helps the tutor and student to create realistic but valuable goals, and underlying expectations throughout the experience. I think that as a tutor, I have strengths…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

The most important things a chemistry tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam…

Listen. Every student excels in some ways and does not in others. This emphasises the importance for a chemistry tutor to present ideas in ways which allow the student to learn them in the most efficient and effective ways. This also ensures that the tutor does not repeat anything the student already knows and identifies what the student has yet…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a chemistry tutor's action, as it…

Being able to teach a student enough material for them to be able to pass the class, that is what you are being paid to do. Such qualities include, understanding the student, being supportive of them and their emotions and ensuring the student is effectively…

A tutor can improve one's overall understand of the subject, not just a specific understanding about a material. That is important because it is building the bigger picture of each subject in the long term. I am flexible in my teaching method, and I am able to adjust to each student depending on what they…

The most important lesson a chemistry tutor can impart is helping students learn how to accept failure and use it as a tool for growth. Many students disengage from the learning environment when they experience confusion or fear making mistakes, often due to inadequate academic support or negative reinforcement when they are incorrect. However,…

Be adaptable. Everyone learns differently and it is the tutor's job to be able to work with the different learning styles. I find that this is the most challenging to get the grasp of as it varies widely across all sorts of students, however, once a chemistry tutor learns how a student processes different problems and is able to cater their…

The first and foremost thing a chemistry tutor should do is to create interest in the subject that is being taught. The reason is simple, when the student is interested in learning the subject, a teacher's job is a cakewalk. A teacher should make the student believe that subjects like maths are pretty easy and interesting to learn. This can be…

The most important thing that a chemistry tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. Inside Glenelg EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Finn worked on profit and loss, focusing on calculating percentage profit and loss in word problems, as well as applying ratios and proportions to real-life assignments.

Year 8 student James revised statistics topics including mean, median, mode, and also explored circular motion with a focus on understanding centripetal force using quick revision activities.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alex practiced converting metric units for length, mass, and capacity alongside estimating and measuring area using standard units.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, missing or incomplete recall of multiplication tables and number facts slowed progress with division and mixed operations; "Zion needs to memorize the timestable up to 8 to consolidate what have we covered in the lesson."

Messy or inconsistent labelling on place value boards caused confusion when working between decimals and whole numbers.

In a Year 10 Physics session, over-reliance on notes for trigonometric values and integration formulas meant slower problem-solving—especially under exam conditions.

A Year 12 student was observed mixing up formulas for derivatives and antiderivatives, which led to repeated errors despite practice.

In each case, lack of secure recall forced frequent pauses mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg East tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, after previously needing guidance on assignments, recently attempted and solved most questions in two maths assignments independently for the first time.

In a high school session, Chloe began tackling ratio problems by herself—last month she needed step-by-step help but now solves several unaided during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read aloud is now bringing books from home to share spelling lists and short writing pieces with the tutor, clearly taking more initiative in reading tasks than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenelg Primary School.
