When I went to tutoring, I had the best experience by having a very motivated, interactive and interesting tutor. I will try to become one of them though I'm still yet to gain formal experience of tutoring In addition,…

Not to teach an exact method for solving a problem, but to teach methods which work for particular general types of problems- techniques which allow them to become more familiar with how mathematics works. Also, to give them the confidence to experiment and learn from their mistakes. I understand how daunting a subject can be if a student loses…

Be honest as this helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. The tutor-student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. You are not there to take the place of the instructor. Let the student know you are there to work with her to supplement classroom and individual study. #…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student truly understand concepts rather than just memorising them, by explaining ideas clearly and in a way that suits the student's learning style. I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

Inside Glenelg EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Finn worked on profit and loss, focusing on calculating percentage profit and loss in word problems, as well as applying ratios and proportions to real-life assignments.

Year 8 student James revised statistics topics including mean, median, mode, and also explored circular motion with a focus on understanding centripetal force using quick revision activities.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alex practiced converting metric units for length, mass, and capacity alongside estimating and measuring area using standard units.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, missing or incomplete recall of multiplication tables and number facts slowed progress with division and mixed operations; "Zion needs to memorize the timestable up to 8 to consolidate what have we covered in the lesson."

Messy or inconsistent labelling on place value boards caused confusion when working between decimals and whole numbers.

In a Year 10 Physics session, over-reliance on notes for trigonometric values and integration formulas meant slower problem-solving—especially under exam conditions.

A Year 12 student was observed mixing up formulas for derivatives and antiderivatives, which led to repeated errors despite practice.

In each case, lack of secure recall forced frequent pauses mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg East tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, after previously needing guidance on assignments, recently attempted and solved most questions in two maths assignments independently for the first time.

In a high school session, Chloe began tackling ratio problems by herself—last month she needed step-by-step help but now solves several unaided during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read aloud is now bringing books from home to share spelling lists and short writing pieces with the tutor, clearly taking more initiative in reading tasks than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenelg Primary School.
