The first and foremost thing a tutor should do is to create interest in the subject that is being taught. The reason is simple, when the student is interested in learning the subject, a teacher's job is a cakewalk. A teacher should make the student believe that subjects like maths are pretty easy and interesting to learn. This can be done by…

- A tutor can change their way of thinking towards some subjects. For instance, during their school class, they might think the subject is boring. But if tutor, teach them in a way to make it more fun and interesting then they like and start to grasp the knowledge quickly. - So the tutor can change their perception and eventually guide them to…

I believe there are several things a tutor can deliver to her students, the primary of which is to instill a sense of confidence and can-do attitude among them. This means my role will not only limit to a tutor but also a mentor, guiding my students on multiple aspects of their academic path. As a seasoned tutor and teacher of English, I'd say my…

1. A tutor can shape how a student thinks about a particular topic/subject. If while teaching something the tutor himself/herself is not interested then the student will be less likely to pay 100% attention 2. A tutor can empower the student to learn better and at their own pace. Just letting the student know that it is okay if you take more time…

I believe the two most important things tutors can do for their students is: to give detailed feedback on a student’s work, recognising their weaknesses and discussing the specific questions in detail, whilst congratulating the student on their correct answers; and to ensure that the student never feels ‘dumb’, leading to them feeling…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. I believe that results are mostly achieved through the effort of the students themselves, so as a tutor I try my best to cover all the concepts and to provide my students with support materials, but I also make sure that my students…

Make the student feel safe is number one and to inspire a love for learning is the goal! Ensuring that the tutor presents them self in a way where the child is comfortable in your presence so they can learn and ask question is vital also. Knowing the child’s individual learning preferences and catering to this makes a huge difference also in the…

I believe it is crucial for tutors to understand that every student is unique and has different learning journeys. Thus, tailoring your approach to meet the specific needs of the students by providing a variety of learning tools and strategies is key. Additionally, being able to be their support system and create an environment for them where they…

As a tutor, I could assist students to understand their subjects by motivating them involving an interactive class with students. When I went to tutoring, I had the best experience by having a very motivated, interactive and interesting tutor. I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide encouragement and support, and to teach skills for problem solving, learning, and managing workloads. Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

I think tutors should be understanding to help them in the best way that they can, like being there for your students, not as a crutch but as someone who can amplify their learning. Teaching students concepts and filling gaps in their knowledge and learning techniques helps them create a strong foundation, which will help them build their…

Being able to help a student achieve future problems on their own by helping them understand how to do a problem rather than just providing the solution is one of the most important things I consider a tutor can do for a student. Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong learner.…

Build interest. For younger student, most of them are still trying to find their interest in a certain field. The best thing I can do is to build interest with my humorous skill. Interest can lead students to an automatic learning mode, they will intake the related knowledge and digest them by themselves, and have the ability to do self-study,…

Inside Glenelg EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Finn worked on profit and loss, focusing on calculating percentage profit and loss in word problems, as well as applying ratios and proportions to real-life assignments.

Year 8 student James revised statistics topics including mean, median, mode, and also explored circular motion with a focus on understanding centripetal force using quick revision activities.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alex practiced converting metric units for length, mass, and capacity alongside estimating and measuring area using standard units.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, missing or incomplete recall of multiplication tables and number facts slowed progress with division and mixed operations; "Zion needs to memorize the timestable up to 8 to consolidate what have we covered in the lesson."

Messy or inconsistent labelling on place value boards caused confusion when working between decimals and whole numbers.

In a Year 10 Physics session, over-reliance on notes for trigonometric values and integration formulas meant slower problem-solving—especially under exam conditions.

A Year 12 student was observed mixing up formulas for derivatives and antiderivatives, which led to repeated errors despite practice.

In each case, lack of secure recall forced frequent pauses mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg East tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, after previously needing guidance on assignments, recently attempted and solved most questions in two maths assignments independently for the first time.

In a high school session, Chloe began tackling ratio problems by herself—last month she needed step-by-step help but now solves several unaided during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read aloud is now bringing books from home to share spelling lists and short writing pieces with the tutor, clearly taking more initiative in reading tasks than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenelg Primary School.
