One of the most important things I can do for a student is to create a positive learning environment, which ensures they feel comfortable to ask questions and take the time that they need to properly understand a topic. I meet students where they are at with their understanding and explain topics in a way that best suits their learning style, with…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to balance a student’s personal goals with their academic priorities, fostering a growth mindset that supports long-term success. The student should drive their own learning journey, where the tutor acts as a conduit through which they build confidence, develop effective study habits, and gain the…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is understand a student's potential and identify the specific areas where they are struggling. Every student has unique strengths, abilities, and learning needs. By assessing their current understanding, a tutor can recognise what the student already knows, where misconceptions exist, and which parts…

An important factor for a tutor is for them to understand that people learn at different paces. Especially if they are quite troubled it is vital that a tutor is understanding, patient, and able to adapt their teaching style when needed. I ensure that I am able to teach step by step, so that there is no confusion and it shows the person I am…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

Every student has his own mind, not everyone has the ability to catch up with the content of the lecture/course. It's important for every tutor to find students who are facing problems in classrooms and make them feel they too have the ability to be successful in the course. Whenever a student feels he won't be able to succeed its every tutor's…

Most importantly a tutor needs to have empathy for his or her students. Being able to take them on a journey of learning and fun so they become more and more curious and are able to learn through keen interest and out of the box thinking is what a tutor should do for students. I would consider patience, kindness, logical thinking and being able to…

As a tutor apart from the subject we need to teach ethics, moral values. And how to overcome the problems they are facing in a day to day life. My major strength is my experience. Because I've been teaching so long I've taught almost every course we offer. As a result, I've told both my chairman and the Principal to do my classes last; I'll be…

Tutor must be friendly and polite towards students.A tutor can develop the interest towards the subject and make learning fun and exciting. Different activities can enhance the interest in the topic. I think the most important something a tutor can do for a student when it comes to trying to teach them is, being close to them and on their level. That way, it is easier for the student to absorb information coming from you as it would feel like the information is coming from a friend and not someone who is greater than them or better than them…

Personally, tutoring for me is more then just learning about maths or science. When I was in highschool, I found myself under constant anxiety over my studies, especially over year 11 and 12, always thinking that maybe I was falling behind or panicking that I alone couldn't understand. For me, a tutor was more then just a place to learn, it was an…

Few viable things which a tutor can do to help the students are: a) Deliver to them motivational thoughts and constantly encouraging them to do well. b) Critically thinking about any difficulty which might pose a hurdle in the pathway of student's learning and bring-forth ways to mitigate it. Inside GlenhavenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Maya focused on critical path analysis for project management scenarios and practiced advanced statistics skills including calculating z-scores, standard deviation, and mean.

Year 11 student Oliver completed past HSC geometry and probability questions, working through selective school exam papers to strengthen understanding of key problem types.

For Year 9, Ethan revised area and volume calculations along with probability concepts using a mix of recent exam papers to build confidence for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, one student missed several lessons due to TAFE commitments and now faces a backlog of material to catch up on—this has led to gaps in exam preparation, as noted: "Should catch up on lessons missed out due to TAFE asap."

A Year 8 student consistently avoided showing full working for algebra questions; the tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 4, another learner forgot about a scheduled lesson entirely. These moments meant time was spent recovering lost ground or correcting avoidable mistakes instead of moving forward with new content.

Recent Achievements

A Glenhaven tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with probability questions now independently draws accurate probability trees after just a brief demonstration.

In another session, a Year 9 student who once waited for hints began practicing past exam papers on her own initiative, identifying her weak spots before lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students surprised their tutor by tackling long division worksheets confidently on the very first attempt—a big shift from last term's nervousness around new maths topics. The lesson ended with her solving every question without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dural Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenhaven Public School.
