I think understanding where the students mindset is and accordingly helping him thrive and do better. However also being able to listen to their whats and needs and providing the right guidance for them. I think the capabilities and skill set i have is pretty good to be a tutor. I believe the most crucial aspect of tutoring is creating an environment where students feel supported and equipped with effective learning methods. A tutor's role extends beyond passing knowledge; it involves understanding each student's unique learning style. By tailoring teaching strategies to individual needs, a tutor can instill a passion for…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

In my opinion, it's most important to help students to understand basic concepts and theories when tutoring them. With these knowledge, students will have confidence to overcome problems and hardness in Maths by themselves. For the past two years, I have tutored several students in Physics and Maths, especially Math Methods year 11 and 12.…

The roll of a tutor is two-fold. Firstly, to help students understand the material they are working with. There are many ways to go about this, but one of the most important roles of a tutor is to be able to bring intuition to the abstract. This in addition to introducing effective methods for solving problems. The second key roll is helping…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is engage them within a subject, keep them interested to learn more, and motivate students to do their absolute best. Tutors should also be able to explain their reasoning very well, and build better study habits I believe my biggest strength as a tutor is being able to explain…

As a tutor, I believe it is critical for providing a space for students to not be afraid to be wrong and foster engagement. A tutor must allow students to think for themselves and provide prompts which enable more critical and deeper thinking. Different parameters that determine WHAT is important to a student vary largely depending on the teacher, student’s needs and the learning content. Be an example. Be relaxed, and make the student enjoy the subject without feeling like education is be all end all. The most important thing a tutor can do is not to flaunt their own brainpower like a flashy superhero cape. Think of it like being a treasure map that leads them to their own buried gems—helping them…

Inside GlensideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Louis focused on multiplication skills by practising 2 and 3 times tables using grids, explored area and perimeter, and was introduced to basic fractions through visual worksheets.

In Year 10, Maja worked on linear relations by graphing equations in y=mx+c form and identifying x/y intercepts, before moving into financial maths topics such as percentage conversions and worded problems involving discounts.

For Year 11 student Sam, recent lessons covered calculus fundamentals like finding derivatives from first principles and applying them to tangent/normal equations, as well as tackling statistics concepts including mean, median, and mode.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student admitted to "just getting lazy when writing," choosing simpler vocabulary and structure even though his spoken ideas were stronger. This led to run-on sentences and grammar errors that persisted despite direct feedback—he often only picked them up when the tutor was present.

In Year 7 Maths, a student's lack of times tables recall slowed her problem-solving, especially with negative numbers; as the tutor observed, "basic arithmetic…slows her down."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 History, quoting large slabs of text instead of concise evidence weakened essay drafts. These habits meant less progress during independent work and slower development under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Glenside tutor recently saw a huge shift in a Year 9 student who, after previously writing very little, completed an entire essay to standard and now holds himself accountable for improving his phrasing.

In senior maths, another high schooler moved from struggling with simultaneous equations to scoring a perfect mark on her latest test—something she hadn't come close to before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised everyone by tackling harder area questions without hesitation and finishing them confidently, even when working early in the morning during school holidays.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Linden Park Primary School.
