The most important qualities of a good tutor is the ability to communicate in a way that makes the student feel motivated, enthusiastic and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along. A good tutor can make learning fun and interesting for young students. They must be able to explain complicated concepts in a…

As a tutor it is my responsibility to make sure the student understands and grasps the concept of the lesson. I am student myself so I know the struggles and the laziness that comes with having to study. I think a tutor should not just focus on studying but also make the study environment a little relaxed and enjoyable as it is hard to concentrate…

Encourage and motivate them to learn, without the right attitude towards learning it can become a chore. Being resilient and have a determination to always improve rather than get caught up in a bad mark. The most important thing a tutor can do is to help a student understand the syllabus of the subject and feel confident in answering any questions that can be in upcoming exams. I have finished my HSC only last year which allows me to understand the pressure students feel towards upcoming exams. This allows me to teach in a certain way that makes…

As a tutor, firstly, I would like my students to understand that making mistakes is normal and part of the learning process. Making mistakes helps them understand the subject material in greater depth. Secondly, I would like to make learning a fun and easy experience for students and give them the tools to work through seemingly challenging tasks…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build understanding, confidence, and independence. It's important to explain concepts clearly so students understand the reasoning, not just the steps. A tutor should also create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. This helps build…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is help and teach them what they don't understand. The qualities they should have are that they should be respectful, considerate, helpful, kind and patient. A tutor can ask if the student understands the content. They can also recap the content they learnt in the last class. They can provide…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understanding the students abilities and goals, and using this to not only teach the student the required content but devise a pathway and teaching style to help the student learn most efficiently and perform at their highest level in examinations. My strength resides in my…

Providing personalised support both academically and personally is one of the most important things that a tutor can provide. Make students feel encouraged and capable of learning. Many students seek private tutoring to supplement their school education with the aim of self-improvement. Therefore, it's crucial for a tutor to understand and align with each student’s unique learning objectives. Personalizing teaching methods to cater to individual needs and learning…

Being accepting of any & all questions in a friendly and non-judgmental manner, so as to make sure the student feels comfortable asking such questions, because otherwise it would defeat the purpose of being tutored. I also think that it's vital for the tutor to give their students the best chance at being able to succeed with their own ability…

From my point of view, identifying students' ability is most important as the effective learning always occur when they work on the zone of proximal development, the difference between what a learner can do without help, and what they can't do. If both teachers and students work within it, the success is almost guaranteed. I think the students…

Attentive listening and keep everything simple: it's deducted from the informal tutor experience that lecturing over hours and hours isn't a good way to help the kids. I tend to ask question like "Did you get it? Was it confusing?" and using simple words to explain the concepts, instead of overwhelming them with a pile of information or technical…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. I think an important role tutor must be able to do is to be able to adaptable in their teaching style to cater to the needs of students. It's important that a tutor can put themselves in their students shoes while teaching. Teaching others can be very frustrating, especially when they can't understand it the first time around but that isn't their fault. They are also trying hard and for most people, it takes one or two times to wrap their head around something they can't grasp and…

Inside GreenacreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah practised time conversions and explored different multiplication and division methods using visual aids.

Year 9 student Sam focused on solving algebraic equations by expanding brackets and also worked through formulas, including changing the subject of a formula.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled probability questions with an emphasis on conditional probability and received support with related homework tasks.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, a student struggled with interpreting division questions and often forgot key steps, leading to confusion during reciprocal tasks. As one tutor noted, "he needed more direction and was very slow in his problem solving."

By Year 11, forgetting important algebraic formulas and prior content made it difficult to approach new problems confidently—sometimes even basic equations slipped away mid-task.

Motivation flagged during lengthy exercise sessions, especially when progress felt slow or mistakes piled up.

In another session, missing out on half the planned content due to time management left unfinished work and mounting frustration as deadlines approached.

Recent Achievements

A Greenacre tutor noted a Year 11 student has become much less reliant on prompts, now working through tricky equations independently and even stopping the lesson to clarify steps when unsure—something he never did before.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor observed that she completed her homework ahead of time for the first time this term and could quickly explain how square roots work without needing reminders.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to hesitate with new maths topics now confidently answers perimeter questions unaided, finishing all practice problems by himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenacre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney Catholic Primary School.
