I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be fully committed to them while fully giving the student their attention while teaching. Furthermore, I believe that a tutor has to prepare themselves very well before a lesson and bring multiple techniques with them in order to make sure that the student can fully grasp an…

A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guide them. What i mean by guiding them is correcting simple mistakes so that they would learn from them and remember not to make the same mistake again. I found that by making a mistake it was a lot easier to remember the correct method after being helped by my teacher. Simlarly promoting…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is to work with a student from a student's perspective. It is exactly the reason why group-studying is so effective as everyone is on the same wavelength. A tutor's job is to be able to "read" into the student's mind and solve-problems by comfortably adjusting and improvising…

The most important criteria to be a tutor is being on time to the class. This is the basic commitment if you have the compassion as a tutor . Understanding and listening to student's problems are essential as we have to design the most suitable materials to students. As a tutor , we have to be patient enough to repeat the concepts . I am really…

Probably to make sure they understand the underlying material rather than just giving the answers. Helping them through problems, and actually encouraging and motivating them along without just revealing the answers will help develop their problem solving skills, making the next problems easier to overcome. Students often break down because they feel everything that is happening to them is unique to them. In reality this is not true, thus as a tutor I believe the most important thing is to be supportive to the student, but also being able to provide responses which are tailored to the understanding/way of learning of the student. My understanding of…

I strongly believe the most basic yet crucial thing a tutor can do for their students is being accessible and flexible to the unique needs of the student. Needless to say, a delivery manner that is dynamic yet effective for the individual student's need is important, however, the difference between a teacher and a tutor lies in their…

I think a tutor can most importantly help a student with the concepts that they are struggling with in school and also helping students learn concepts that their school hasn't gone through yet so that once they do, it'll be revision for them rather than learning it for the first time. This particularly helped me when I was doing my HSC.…

Everything starts with guidance. Words are so powerful. So the main duty for a tutor is to give the key points to the student and make the student love the subject. Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. They can also be someone else for the students to ask questions where they may be too shy or unable to during a large classroom environment. Tutoring can also help reinforce content that students learnt that day or week. I am a…

Inside Greenhills BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Thomas practised addition, subtraction, telling time, identifying shapes, and skip counting to build foundational numeracy.

In Year 7, Diyian focused on fractions and decimals as well as tackling multiplication and long division problems.

For a senior high school session, Year 10 student Mia explored angle identities—including co-interior and alternate angles—and worked through geometry questions involving types of triangles and parallel lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on essay-based subjects was encouraged to gather research sources as she went, but tended to leave this step until after drafting, making it harder to integrate evidence smoothly. As noted, "she would benefit if she gathered sources whilst in the process of learning those areas."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 maths student sometimes left homework incomplete due to outside commitments; when tasks were finished late or skipped, recent progress with decimals and fractions wasn't fully reinforced before moving on.

In both cases, organization around ongoing work created last-minute stress or slowed consolidation.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Greenhills Beach noticed Tom, a high school student, was initially hesitant with volume conversions but, after working through the method together, began applying them accurately across different maths problems without needing prompts.

In another session, Maiee—also in high school—started making clear links between historical sources and essay questions on the Pompeii and Herculaneum module; she now actively highlights ethical issues instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Diyian (Year 5) had previously struggled to understand multiplication and division but is now tackling those concepts more confidently and even explains his reasoning aloud when asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cronulla Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cronulla High School.
