I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is leave the client with a feeling of achievement, that they have gained a new, reinforced or re-established understanding of things they may have been uncertain or unaware about. If at the end of the day the individual feels like they haven't changed, then this, I believe is an…

Have the student recognise that there is more to the subject than just what they see at school. To understand their unique ways of learning and use that to help them flourish. My main strength has always been communication and time management. In my time as a tutor I have also found patience as a strength. My ability to build strong rapport…

The special thing about a chemistry tutor compared to a classroom teacher is that tutors deal with students on a much more personal level, with this, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand and relate to the student personally his/her insights on the subject. Tutors can try to understand why the student…

A tutor should be able to help clear each and every notion that the student has about a certain topic. They should not get tired of explaining concepts on repeat. A good tutor should always be consistent and take note of what their student does. They should regularly follow up on lesson plans and make sure that the student is not burdened by any…

Being patient in allowing students to fully grasp a topic or idea before proceeding. I believe tutors have the biggest impact on how a student approaches a subject. Speaking from personal experience, I don't think I would've liked studying the subjects I had in year 10, 11 and 12 if I hadn't had good teachers who knew how to make the subjects interesting to learn. A tutor is capable of making studying feel less burdensome and I…

Inside Gregory HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amelia focused on positive and negative integers using number lines, along with strategies for rounding numbers to different digit places.

In Year 8, Grace worked through laws of indices—both multiplication and addition—and revised algebraic techniques like simplifying expressions and solving linear equations, sometimes using past test questions for extra practice.

For Year 9, Nishta covered financial mathematics including calculating tax from bracket tables and practiced applying formulas for bonuses and commissions in a range of problem-solving scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on Pythagoras' Theorem was advised not to overwrite answers and to write formulae before starting—messy layout made it hard to catch calculation slips.

In Year 10, a student tackling algebraic fractions avoided writing full steps, as one tutor noted, "she skipped setting out her working, which led to rounding errors."

Meanwhile, an older student preparing for advanced algebra assessments had incomplete homework practice; this limited her ability to recall formulas under test conditions.

Across grades, missing or unfinished practice sums meant students often entered lessons without the familiarity needed for new problem types.

Recent Achievements

One Gregory Hills tutor saw a real turnaround with Mia, a high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help—she now uses "pen to paper" strategies and talks through problems instead of staying silent.

Analiese, also in high school, moved from being anxious about word problems to actually enjoying them after learning some new techniques; she worked out all her practice questions on her own last session.

In primary years, Ifra went from making repeated errors on arithmetic laws to fixing those mistakes independently and completing the assigned work without extra prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Narellan Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gregory Hills Public School.
