The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor lessons to their needs, and inspire a love for learning. Providing support, encouraging independence, and fostering critical thinking are also key to helping them succeed. My strength as a tutor lies in my ability to simplify complex concepts and tailor my…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student truly understand concepts rather than just memorise them. Building confidence is also key, as many students struggle due to self-doubt rather than ability. A good tutor should adapt to each student's learning style, be patient, and create a supportive environment where questions are…

To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

The most important thing for a tutor to provide to a student is confidence. Without implementing confidence into the student for the subject they are struggling with, success in the subject will be harder. This means I will ensure students understand the concepts of the subject by teaching them the basics to build their confidence. My strengths…

I believe that a tutor should be prepared to adapt to their students learning style to maximise their understanding. Few viable things which a tutor can do to help the students are: a) Deliver to them motivational thoughts and constantly encouraging them to do well. b) Critically thinking about any difficulty which might pose a hurdle in the pathway of student's learning and bring-forth ways to mitigate it. As a tutor, I believe to have the following…

Facilitate the growth of a student to allow a student to reach their full potential, which means giving 110% at all times for the student. I also believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be flexible and approachable, so that tutoring is a positive experience which further allows students to flourish. Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to truly understand them and their learning ways. For example, I am a visual learner and so I learn better using diagrams, colours and videos. But not everyone is a visual learner and so they might need other aids to help them learn concepts such as songs or textbooks. I…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not force them into studying and to not put too much pressure on them to understand a certain topic. I believe that I can teach them in a way I have been taught and make them understand a certain problem easily. And even if I fail to make them understand I study the problem…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do to assist a student is to understand that every individual has there own way of learning and that it is the tutor's role to adapt to the student to form personalised explanations and learning plans. Additionally, a tutor should take responsibility to maintain a good command of the subject area…

I think some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student involve listening and understanding where they're really struggling to be able to help them effectively. The one thing more than anything that a tutor can do is to offer a safe place where students will not be afraid of failure. Then guide them step by step until they understand the concept, and encourage them to carry on even when things get difficult. A good tutor gives confidence and no knowledge. Empathy is essential for a teacher. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if a student doesn’t understand a topic yet or feels behind academically. Inside Harris ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student worked on addition and subtraction of double-digit numbers, with extra focus on using a number line for subtraction and strategies for borrowing.

In Year 10, Anika tackled advanced algebraic fractions—practicing addition, subtraction, and factorisation—and also expanded and simplified expressions involving surds.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Yash covered properties of the nucleus in Physics, specifically exploring nuclear fission and fusion through real-world examples from Module 8.

Recent Challenges

In Year 2 maths, one student's tendency to draw and become distracted during lessons led to unfinished subtraction tasks; "gets multiplication and division confused with addition and subtraction" was a concern when homework wasn't completed.

In Year 8 algebra, another learner avoided showing working for factorising surds—"remembering how minus signs and brackets must be used" became an issue when errors weren't visible.

A Year 12 physics student relied heavily on memory for Doppler effect formulas but struggled to recall them under HSC exam-style pressure, making it harder to benefit from feedback after practice questions.

Recent Achievements

One Harris Park tutor noticed a big change in a Year 8 student who, after initially struggling with expanding brackets, was confidently working through them independently by the end of their session and even began manipulating fractions more effectively.

Another high schooler recently asked several thoughtful questions about surds—a shift from earlier lessons when he hesitated to speak up—and then applied new rules across problems without prompting.

In a Year 4 lesson, a student who used to guess at double-digit subtraction is now using the number line method consistently and checks her own answers before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Oliver's Primary School.
