This helps the tutor tailor their approach to best support the student's individual needs. 1>Expertise in the subject matter: The ability to teach a subject effectively requires a deep understanding of the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them that learning can be enjoyable, and not just a task. I believe that a tutor should take the time to motivate their students to approach learning with a positive perspective, and provide them with the necessary advice when students have doubts or worries about their…

A tutor needs to be clear about the concept he/she is teaching. If a tutor has clarity of mind while teaching, it will automatically transfer to the student with good explanations. The most important thing a tutor can do would be to be patient enough to go over and over the topics until the student fully grasps all the concepts and not rushing through the topics. My strength would be to simplify and present matter in an interactive and easily understandable manner and make sure the students understand the finer concepts of…

In addition to professional knowledge and skills, tutors need to be patient when dealing with students. In addition, tutors have to be careful to express their opinions and fully understand the students' ideas when teaching the course. A tutor can make a student stress free by making learning so easy and interesting , that a student enjoy learning rather than running away from it. And obviously achieve good grades. I can make a boring subject interesting to any student as I make use of properties and imagination to teach the topics and make learning a 'fun learning'. I…

To truly let the students to understand concepts. Yes, achieving high marks and grades is important, but it shouldn't override the understanding of concepts in curriculums. Not only allowing students to have the ability to effectively answer exam questions, but also most importantly to let them recognise how these knowledge points can connect from…

A tutor needs to provide support and consideration of a student's abilities, and empower the student to achieve beyond what they think they can achieve. In particular, for younger students, I believe that tutors can and will help to lay the foundational stones that will provide the driving force to empower students to their best. Even if a…

I feel the most important thing for any tutor is to be able to communicate with its student effectively. It is important to go around the class and ask questions individually to check on the understanding. Teaching has…

The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. In school classes where they are often one of many, they may find that the teaching style may not work for them and that they cannot achieve their goals. But can I just say how lovely she is and in particular Aidan is feeling very comfortable with her to the point he's happy to have her come during the school holidays!! He's normally a little reserved and can sometimes take a while to warm up but they seem to have clicked really well and he doesn't appear intimidated like he can do at times.

Inside HeidelbergTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alice focused on simplifying fractions and converting between improper and mixed numbers, along with practice in representing fractions on a number line.

Year 10 student Liam worked through chemistry concepts including covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds, as well as identifying polar versus non-polar bonds using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ava reviewed biology topics by summarising key points for an upcoming SAC and tackling challenging practice questions related to photosynthesis and respiration.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, a student attempted to solve equations mentally without showing each step—"she tries to complete problems in one go rather than show each step taken"—which led to confusion and hidden errors, especially during division tasks.

Homework was only partially submitted and often lacked clear working, making it hard to identify where understanding broke down.

In Year 11 Chemistry, another student relied on lists but struggled to distinguish between similar concepts because they avoided creating detailed comparison guides.

During English sessions at the primary level, one student's tendency to leave sentences incomplete resulted in vague explanations that missed key details when answering comprehension questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg recently noticed Mitch, a Year 10 student, now quickly spots alliteration and metaphors on his own—something he hesitated with before—so they were able to dive deeper into poem analysis together.

In chemistry, an older student has started differentiating between polar and nonpolar molecules independently after struggling to explain the concept last term.

Meanwhile, Elena in Year 4 tackled her trickiest times tables drill yet; she managed to call out factors that used to trip her up and finished the sheet without needing reminders or hints from her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
