The most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and incite passion around learning. If the student knows the outcome of what's being taught and enjoys the process of learning, then it is much easier for the student to build on their own knowledge independently in the future. I believe I can create excitement around topics and show students how…

I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Instead of spoon-feeding all the information, I expect students to brainstorm ideas. I motivate the student to think in various aspects which would help them broaden…

Based on my experience, I would love to help my students to find out the most appropriate study method for them. As I was in secondary school, science subjects were not my preferable subjects at all. I learnt it by heart and completely did not understand the theories behind at all. My method was not appropriate as it is more suitable for…

The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. My strength is illustrating concepts and finding the right examples that explain the point best. I also have good communication skills that make the student…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence alongside their knowledge. Many students who struggle with maths and physics aren't lacking ability, they've just had a gap in understanding that knocked their self-belief. A good tutor pinpoints exactly where that gap is, explains it patiently in a way that makes sense to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them truly understand the material. Understand their way of learning, and adjusting to the student to accomodate them. I have had multiple experiences where my tutor would try to teach their method and force that method upon me. However, it is important to recognise the difference in the way different people learn, and not force upon a way of learning and hope that way of learning…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is give students the right direction and support so they can build confidence and excel on their own. But can I just say how lovely she is and in particular Aidan is feeling very comfortable with her to the point he's happy to have her come during the school holidays!! He's normally a little reserved and can sometimes take a while to warm up but they seem to have clicked really well and he doesn't appear intimidated like he can do at times.

Inside HeidelbergTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alice focused on simplifying fractions and converting between improper and mixed numbers, along with practice in representing fractions on a number line.

Year 10 student Liam worked through chemistry concepts including covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds, as well as identifying polar versus non-polar bonds using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ava reviewed biology topics by summarising key points for an upcoming SAC and tackling challenging practice questions related to photosynthesis and respiration.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, a student attempted to solve equations mentally without showing each step—"she tries to complete problems in one go rather than show each step taken"—which led to confusion and hidden errors, especially during division tasks.

Homework was only partially submitted and often lacked clear working, making it hard to identify where understanding broke down.

In Year 11 Chemistry, another student relied on lists but struggled to distinguish between similar concepts because they avoided creating detailed comparison guides.

During English sessions at the primary level, one student's tendency to leave sentences incomplete resulted in vague explanations that missed key details when answering comprehension questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg recently noticed Mitch, a Year 10 student, now quickly spots alliteration and metaphors on his own—something he hesitated with before—so they were able to dive deeper into poem analysis together.

In chemistry, an older student has started differentiating between polar and nonpolar molecules independently after struggling to explain the concept last term.

Meanwhile, Elena in Year 4 tackled her trickiest times tables drill yet; she managed to call out factors that used to trip her up and finished the sheet without needing reminders or hints from her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
