The most important thing is to deal with patience with students. Not every student learns the same way or comes from the same background so tutor should asses, analyze and appraise the students. A tutor should have different and interesting approaches to make the students understand the concepts thoroughly. Tutor should be friendly and always…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

It is crucial to encourage critical thinking, to guide active learning but not spoon-feed, to give motivation and encouragement to students. Tutors and teachers should inspire students and be a good role model. My strengths as an educator include patience, adaptability and understanding. I encourage students to speak out what they have understood…

The Tutor should have a lot of patience while teaching children, as each child is different from one other. Tutor should understand each student's ability and talent and motivate them to do further in their own field. It should be the tutor's job to go to each student individually and ask if they are good with study materials and understanding…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to be available for them, not just during tutoring sessions. This includes providing a range of different resources and being open for them to contact you out of hours for extra feedback. I think it's important for tutors to be there for their students as many students tend to…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

The most valuable asset I have as a tutor is my belief that every student can succeed. Each student should come in knowing that there is someone who believes they can achieve more if they have the right motivation. Teachers have a large impact on shaping students mindset, and wellbeing, which I take to heart for all my students. As a pre-service…

The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

I think there are two main things a tutor can do for a student; maintain high grades and garner a positive attitude. It is imperative as a tutor's job to help the student maintain or achieve high grades in the particular area of study. However, high academic standards are not simply enough. It is also important for a tutor to build up an…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be their personal cheerleader. Patience and humility. When teaching, one must maintain composure or they will go off course. Additionally, the tutor should never believe that they are more knowledgeable than their students in all topics or that they know everything. Many teachers dislike it when their pupils contradict them and turn the situation into an ego conflict. This is…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to encourage, support and develop confidence in their ability. But can I just say how lovely she is and in particular Aidan is feeling very comfortable with her to the point he's happy to have her come during the school holidays!! He's normally a little reserved and can sometimes take a while to warm up but they seem to have clicked really well and he doesn't appear intimidated like he can do at times.

Inside HeidelbergTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alice focused on simplifying fractions and converting between improper and mixed numbers, along with practice in representing fractions on a number line.

Year 10 student Liam worked through chemistry concepts including covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds, as well as identifying polar versus non-polar bonds using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ava reviewed biology topics by summarising key points for an upcoming SAC and tackling challenging practice questions related to photosynthesis and respiration.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, a student attempted to solve equations mentally without showing each step—"she tries to complete problems in one go rather than show each step taken"—which led to confusion and hidden errors, especially during division tasks.

Homework was only partially submitted and often lacked clear working, making it hard to identify where understanding broke down.

In Year 11 Chemistry, another student relied on lists but struggled to distinguish between similar concepts because they avoided creating detailed comparison guides.

During English sessions at the primary level, one student's tendency to leave sentences incomplete resulted in vague explanations that missed key details when answering comprehension questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg recently noticed Mitch, a Year 10 student, now quickly spots alliteration and metaphors on his own—something he hesitated with before—so they were able to dive deeper into poem analysis together.

In chemistry, an older student has started differentiating between polar and nonpolar molecules independently after struggling to explain the concept last term.

Meanwhile, Elena in Year 4 tackled her trickiest times tables drill yet; she managed to call out factors that used to trip her up and finished the sheet without needing reminders or hints from her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
