To help encourage them to try there best. Everyone wants 100% but they may not necessarily get it. A tutor has to help a student reach their own version of 100%, to put in all their effort, enjoy their work, and be proud. My strength is I am a people person, I get along well with others and enjoy teaching others. My weakness is I don't have any…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand their true needs. Sometimes students need more than just a teacher who is repeating themselves to help them understand things. Tutors should be trying different techniques and approaches that better suit that student, and understand the weaknesses of that student to better help…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide a positive and healthy learning environment. A tutor should also be able to help a student reach his or her academic potential. I am a very understanding and patient individual. I understand that every kid has his or her own style of learning, hence I will try to be as…

Just as important as academic results, I believe the most important thing is to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learn from it. Tutor should also help students to build confidence and motivation, helping students to believe in their ability to learn and solve questions independently . A good tutor…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to influence a positive relationship with learning and ensure their self concept isn't hindered from struggling with their schoolwork. I believe the effort and determined attitude to continuously learn and grow is the most important takeaway and will be a key driving factor to…

To really understand where the student is coming from. Far too often throughout my own life I have been frustrated with the way in which teachers and tutors treat you as just another student and bulldoze you with an answer before you've even managed to get you question out. To be able to adapt their teaching style to better suit the student. To…

I believe that a tutor's most important job is to build a student's confidence. Most particularly when a student is struggling, building confidence allows them to feel that they can try and fail, which is essential to learning. With more advanced students, confidence allows them to stretch themselves even further. I believe I have developed a…

A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. A tutor should also be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the student particularly in a respectful and encouraging way. Most importantly, building a rapport with the student is crucial so as to…

The tutor can help a student to build confidence as well as help pupil in the study by making them practice on their weak points, as a teacher never judge students weakness but helps them to improve it. I believe that tutor and student relationship to be more friendly and believe that if concepts are strong of a student so they can go a long way.…

As briefly mentioned in the question above, the most important things tutor can do for a student is to not make the experience another class that "drags on". Interacting with the student on a level where he/she can enjoy or be intrigued by the work is essential. To do this, you cannot let the theories from a textbook stay as theories.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster an enjoyment of the subject. It is incredible how much one good teacher can completely change your perception of a subject. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assist them in developing the relevant skills that they need to be successful and proficient in a subject, to the point in which they have enough confidence within their own abilities to approach the curriculum without feeling that they require extra assistance. I reckon the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student is spending time with them, listening, sympathising, effectively communicating and building connections with them. School curriculum is not designed for any particular students, so many of them can't study the way they find the most suitable and easiest for them, resulting in the need…

I find that addressing the finer parts that students find more challenging is essential for a tutor. While students may have already covered the concepts in class, the learning process is often not tailored to their individual needs. A tutors role is to adopt a more personalised approach, taking the time to understand each student’s unique level…

As a tutor, I can teach concepts and skills from a different perspective to what the student learns in a classroom. Ezymath tutoring made an effort to provide my daughter with a tutor who had a maths specialty. Ella was polite, punctual and spent the time to understand and assist my daughter in her weak areas.
Pam, Heidelberg Heights

Inside Heidelberg HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily explored factorising and substitution in complex algebraic expressions to build foundational skills.

For Year 10, Marcus worked through scatter plots and used Pearson's coefficient to interpret bivariate data visually and numerically.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia focused on least square regression lines for statistical analysis, as well as reviewing data transformation methods relevant for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes forgot essential materials—her maths books and calculator—which meant gaps in tracking what concepts she'd struggled with.

In VCE, one student's written solutions for statistics were "hard to follow," making it tough to pinpoint errors or show full working for exam marks.

Several times across Years 7–10, answers were mathematically correct but missed the actual question requirement; as one tutor noted, "she answered with a valid calculation, but not what was asked."

When students misinterpret questions or leave their resources behind, class time gets spent on clarifying basics rather than pushing ahead.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg Heights noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to speak up, now asks for clarification whenever something doesn't make sense and then applies the feedback to solve practice questions accurately.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student managed to get through an entire chapter ahead of their class for the first time—last term they struggled just to keep pace.

For a younger learner, one primary school student who was reluctant to try tougher maths problems is now willing to attempt more complicated questions independently and often persists until finding a solution.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
