Be honest as this helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. The tutor-student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. You are not there to take the place of the instructor. Let the student know you are there to work with her to supplement classroom and individual study. #…

Not to teach an exact method for solving a problem, but to teach methods which work for particular general types of problems- techniques which allow them to become more familiar with how mathematics works. Also, to give them the confidence to experiment and learn from their mistakes. I understand how daunting a subject can be if a student loses…

I would consider being able to keep calm and patient for the student an absolute necessity as a chemistry tutor. As well as, being able to keep the student determined and positive if faced with a few hurdles along the way. As a tutor I believe my strengths are being able to read the student and understanding whether it's working, or if another…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is make the subject fun and enjoyable. I remember automatically hating subjects if the teacher at school gave boring lectures and I strive to make studying something students look forward to. I believe the two most important things tutors can do for their students is: to give detailed feedback on a student’s work, recognising their weaknesses and discussing the specific questions in detail, whilst congratulating the student on their correct answers; and to ensure that the student never feels ‘dumb’, leading to them feeling…

Responsibility is the first word that comes to my mind. I come from Vietnam, and I have seen very few Australian students who require a chemistry tutor, comparing to Vietnamese students. If they hire a tutor, they must have a need to improve their academic performance. Hence, a tutor needs to be responsible for them to achieve a better result. I…

For me, it is to be very patient and never stop giving encouragement. Cause everyone has different learning capabilities but it doesn't mean that because some can learn faster than others, doesn't mean they can no longer do it. We just have to be patient and make them believe in themselves. Patience. Critical Thinker. Problem Solver. Encouraging.…

Being a chemistry tutor brings me valuable lessons, one of which is to ensure the students understand the concepts through problems. Inside Henley BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Aiden worked through volume of rectangular prisms and explored ratios, plus learned quick ways to identify multiples of 3, 9, and 11.

In Year 10, Jasmine practiced solving quadratic equations using the sum-product rule and factorising both perfect squares and differences of squares.

For Year 12, Noah focused on advanced calculus by tackling integration techniques to calculate areas between curves and revising the distinction between definite integrals and area under a curve.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was often "doing the algebra in his head" and skipping written steps, which led to confusion when sign errors crept in—especially during equation rearrangements.

In Year 10 chemistry, one learner repeatedly struggled to identify what a complex question was asking, resulting in lost time and missed marks on worded problems.

A senior student's revision habits showed a tendency to stick with familiar formulas for statistics rather than practicing unfamiliar or multi-step problems; this limited growth in critical thinking.

When essays were written for Year 11 English, lack of planning meant irrelevant details crowded out focused arguments.

Recent Achievements

A Henley Beach tutoring session saw a Year 10 student move from guessing on algebra homework to confidently tackling similar problems unaided during lessons, showing a clear shift toward independent thinking.

Another high schooler who previously struggled with balancing chemical equations was able to resolve their confusion and now keeps pace with classroom material without falling behind.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to hesitate when choosing area formulas began using memory cues independently and accurately selected the right formula for each shape, even explaining her reasoning aloud as she worked through problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Henley Beach Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Star of the Sea School.
