A tutor's primary objective is to ensure that the student truly understands the content, and while doing so, the tutor must present the material in an interesting and engaging manner. If done correctly, this may ignite a passion in the student for the subject. I have a deep understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, which will allow me to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their cognitive load. Focusing on how much the student can process during a given session, allows an effective learning plan to be created. In turn, the student will be able to establish deeper understandings and be able to reach their full potential. My strengths are…

To be an effective tutor, it is essential to focus on three critical aspects. Secondly, building a strong rapport with the student is essential in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show that they believe in them and their ability to succeed academically and overall. I tell my students on a regular basis "I believe in you!" and "You can do this!" I find that creating this positive and encouraging learning environment is integral. My strengths as a tutor begins with…

A tutor should be able to provide a better understanding of concepts not just show them how to do questions and then copy working in other formats for future exams. They should also be able to make it seem more enjoyable as students perform better when they actually enjoy a subject compared to if they are just doing it for a better ATAR score.…

It is essential for the tutor to present themselves, their content, and their teaching methods in a way which makes the lesson engaging and enjoyable for the student. I believe one of the most important thing would be to build a student's confidence, teaching them to feel positive about themselves. Perhaps the student feels incapable of solving problems, despite possessing the ability. Thus, it is a tutor's duty to show students that they are capable and believe in themselves. It is also important that the…

I believe that tutors must be good analyzers if they want to succeed. I mean that they have to examine the way students study and practice and even think. After a good observation, they can provide students with the tools with which students can improve their weaknesses. This can be different form one student to another one. Besides, Encouraging…

To explain things in such a way as if they aren't familiar with the concept. This way they are able to understand what they are doing and why it is done in such a way. I think that the best thing to do when tutoring is allow the students free rein when answering questions, as I have often found that almost all of their learning comes from when they make mistakes. I tend to try to give them only small nudges when getting them to complete a question, and reduce the amount of my interference over preceding…

Inside HiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby revised division strategies, focusing on inverse operations and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 using the written method.

For Year 5, Ashton worked through fractions with different denominators as well as decimal addition and subtraction.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ella practised measurement conversions between kilograms and grams along with regular mental maths exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student faced confusion completing a fraction number line revision sheet, as noted: "there was some question on how to complete it," and did not seek clarification from their teacher—this hesitation delayed progress.

In Year 10 maths, another student needed repeated reminders to check working out, especially when handling area calculations for irregular shapes; missed steps led to incorrect answers that went unnoticed until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner avoided verbalising column values during addition tasks, which made it harder to spot mistakes and slowed development of place value understanding.

Each scenario left students less confident heading into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Hilton tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to rush through maths problems is now double-checking subtraction answers by adding back, catching mistakes before moving on.

In another session, a Year 7 student—who'd previously guessed at fraction questions—successfully simplified different types of fractions without prompting and explained the process aloud.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read out loud completed an entire reading comprehension passage with only minimal help and answered all follow-up questions independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hilton Primary School.
