The tutor has to be a perfect role model in overall aspects of academics, discipline and punctuality. They must be devout and ready to put their 100% efforts to their students career. I am a positive attitude and am a never-give-up person. I am a sophophilic person which I believe is the primary quality needed for a…

Guide my students, rather than teach him. The most important thing I can do for my students is to try my best to teach, so I can see their change day to day. I am very patient and perseverance, a tutor cannot be anxious to students, we need to give him some time to digest the knowledge. And I am very kind to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is be able to get them back in the right direction when they are lost. To give the student the tools and knowledge to be able to further their own learning. My strengths as a tutor in particular are my versatility. Frankly, needless to say being a good tutor primarily stipulates teaching content in a way that makes it easier to understand. Hence, by default that does become the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. This pursuit can be undertaken via a range of supplementary actions such as engaging classes, use of props, and more. But in doing…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them passionate about the subject. I wholeheartedly believe that a student must not cram information purely for grades, but to generate a genuine interest for the subject with the assistance of the tutor. I am very familiar with working with children from a large variety of ages. I…

Similar to my response to the last question, I believe a tutor exists to personalise the teaching experience. What this means is understanding exactly what it is the student that gets the student stuck on a certain topic. It may be the whole topic in general or it may be that one small concept is throwing them off, but the most important thing a…

A tutor is someone under whose guidance a child is going to learn academically and also real life lessons. A tutor should himself/herself execute the things that is expected out of the child. A tutor should be clear with his/her concepts because it will enhance the overall efficiency of learning of the student. A tutor along with being a tutor…

The most important things I am concerned about are my students’ progress and emotions, often even over results. If someone is reluctant to learn, which can be common in the volunteering programs I mentored at, then I believe first building a relationship, understanding why, and to provide engagement may be more important. Nonetheless, if a…

One of the most important things that is especially applicable in mathematics, is to be able to explain the roots of a concept and why it is used. I have found that reliability is something students and parents alike, really appreciate in a tutor. It is important for a tutor to be someone that both student and parent can depend on, as we are there to provide an important service to both. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be there for them and listen. It is important for students to know that mistakes are supposed to be made, and as tutors we are here to guide them through their mistakes. Furthermore, our role as tutors is to help children do the work, not do the work for them. Sometimes all students need is…

A tutor needs to be able to imbibe in a student, a way of thinking about things, instead of just spoonfeeding the content and making everything easy for the student. It is very important to clear the basics of the student before anything else. Once the base is strong enough, the student will be able to handle any level of complexity in things. I…

Inside Holland ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student William practised converting between improper and proper fractions and worked on adding and subtracting fractions through targeted word problems.

In Year 11, Mia focused on solving exponential equations and modelling real-world situations using logarithmic scales, including pH and Richter scale questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James refined his understanding of Kepler's Laws by tackling complex orbital calculations and also solved challenging incline plane and pulley physics problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on algebra and logs relied heavily on the calculator's "SolveN(" function, as noted: "Can't always rely on the calculator to solve it for you." This made it harder to check algebraic steps and spot errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student forgot to show squared terms when applying Pythagoras' theorem, which led to mistakes before taking square roots.

For a Year 5 student, difficulties with times tables meant basic addition was often done mentally but not written out, so explanations were unclear. In these moments, answers looked right—until small gaps derailed the whole solution.

Recent Achievements

One Holland Park tutor noticed Colin, a Year 12 student, is now tackling complex calculus questions with much less prompting—he recently solved exponential power functions independently after struggling to recall which formulas to use in earlier sessions.

In a physics lesson, another high schooler not only completed her worksheet without assistance but also corrected her own mistakes when prompted—a big change from previously waiting for help.

Meanwhile, Liz in Year 7 came prepared with topic sentences already drafted for her English assignment, showing new initiative and organisation that wasn't there before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Holland Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cavendish Road State High School.
