Enriching a students' knowledge of a topic and allowing that increased knowledge to shine through their academic prowess within their schooling efforts. My strengths would definitely be my strong knowledge of literature as well as my growing ability to teach. My only weakness, if I had to choose one would be my age, as I am still quite…

The most important part of a tutor's job is to encourage the student and to also recognise any signs in the student that they may not understand what is being taught to them. Many children are shy when admitting that they don't completely comprehend a subject and it is important to let them know that they can share their insecurities within the…

The most important thing tutors can do is support their students which includes adapting lessons to individual learning styles and needs. Along with pinpointing any gaps in knowledge, and help the students understand those areas. Along with listening to them, about what things they struggle with and what they’re already good at. My strengths…

MENTOR/TUTOR It is important that tutors have a friendly approach to students and make sure that students set a goal for every lesson. This way as a tutor we know that the student knows what is being taught and ensure the student understands the concepts. My strengths as a tutor are knowing the students' weaknesses of each area, and knowing…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to understand how the student learns. By knowing the students learning preferences and ability the tutor can tailor their approach to individuals rather than utilising a blanket approach, which can often leave some students behind. My strengths lie in the ability to communicate ideas or…

Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Also, make sure the student actually…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to never give up on them. I am confident that everyone has the ability to achieve great results given the right amount of effort and proper guidance. It is esesntial for any tutor to always remain patient and explain a concept as many times as required until the student themselves feel…

Removing the feeling of being intimidated to learn something that looks extremely complex. The amount of specific terminology in physics, maths and even english to a extent stops many people from pursing them long term or to a higher level or convinces students they are incapable of learning it. The most important thing I tutor can do for their student is to be compassionate and be a person they feel comfortable approaching when they're in doubt. Just doing this will make it so much easier for the students to ask for what they need instead of feeling hesitant that they'll look unintelligent. It also helps me really understand their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only help them understand the lessons, but assist them in the development of individual thought. Being able to teach in a way where students are readily motivated and inspired by the way you teach. Tutors can do so much for students. To choose a few, a tutor should be honest and always try their best to educate and assist the student to their best capacity. Moreover, allowing the student to be okay with failing and making mistakes as part of the journey without feeling ashamed is critical to building their self-confidence and understanding…

Being patient in allowing students to fully grasp a topic or idea before proceeding. Often students have topics and subjects that have been neglected by the schooling system, and sometimes it is necessary to move backward before we go forward. As a tutor, I would develop a great sense of responsibility in my students' results. However, I feel that it is in my best interest to first develop a strong relationship with my student and ensure that they trust my ability to teach them. I believe that it is essential to help my student develop a positive attitude towards their academic journey…

Inside Horningsea ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Alex practiced solving linear equations and interpreting coordinate graphs, building confidence through step-by-step examples.

For Year 10, Emily worked on algebraic indices and roots as well as applying BODMAS to simplify complex expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James reviewed Module 7 chemistry topics by tackling hydrocarbon nomenclature and identifying properties of alcohols using summary tables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 English, forgetting to complete homework led to less practice with spelling and sentence structure—one note said, "needs more work on spelling and doing his homework."

For a Year 7 student, untidy long division and unclear working made it hard for her to read her own maths solutions; this caused confusion when checking answers.

A Year 11 Chemistry lesson revealed difficulties organizing complex responses: "needs to work on expressing in a structured manner by doing practice HSC questions."

In each case, missing or messy written work meant time was lost re-reading or clarifying instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

In Horningsea Park, a Year 11 student, Reuben, who previously hesitated to try harder maths questions, is now attempting every problem and even brings his own examples to sessions.

In Year 9 English, Sarah used to need lots of help planning her narratives but recently built her own story with minimal assistance, showing she's more willing to take risks with her ideas.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often made spelling mistakes can now spell them from memory when asked out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnes Hill Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John Edmondson High School.
