Along the way, it is important to offer encouragement and create a supportive environment where they can feel comfortable. With this foundation, students are guided towards becoming independent and confident…

A tutor should, first and foremost, be amicable and trustworthy to students. This means that students should be able to confide in their tutors in the event that they are struggling to grasp matter, and, no matter how many times they ask, the tutor should provide the necessary assistance. I would say that my strengths as a tutor centre around my…

Ensuring that they grasp the knowledge taught is the most crucial thing for me. If they are able to teach it to others, I feel that I have done my job as a tutor. I find it second nature to explain theories to others. I also find ways to make memorising easier. My favourite would be to say tht unsaturated fats are kinky, this is due to the kinks…

A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. A tutor should also create a safe environment where the student feels they can ask…

In my opinion the most important thing a teacher can do for a Student is to make a Educational related understanding with the student. As in my case I make sure the student clear his idea and he/she is not shy to ask more questions. I take tutoring as my Passion so I do not move to the next idea/topic if my student did not understand the previous…

This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. 1. Fostering interest in the subject: If a tutor can kickstart an intrinsic motivator for the subject within the student, then the student can study the syllabus more thoroughly without it feeling boring. 2. Provide a holistic understanding of the subject: HSC and School Exams test the level of knowledge possessed by a student. As such we must…

Especially if they are quite troubled it is vital that a tutor is understanding, patient, and able to adapt their teaching style when needed. Being patient. A lot of teachers get frustrated when students do not understand concepts the way they teach them. It is important to teach every student in their own way and be patient with the teaching process. Otherwise a student's confidence and motivation to learn is harmed. Inside HornsbyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy revised angle sums in polygons and practiced calculating surface area for various shapes.

In Year 9, Daniel tackled simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then moved on to worded algebra problems for extra challenge.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Emily focused on compound versus simple interest calculations and worked through HSC-style financial maths questions to consolidate exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student repeatedly relied on memorizing formulas rather than understanding when and why to use them—"not every question can fit into a formula perfectly," the tutor noted—making it tough to adapt to unfamiliar problems.

A Year 11 student tackling statistics struggled with organizing key definitions and formulas; instead of preparing a reference sheet, time was lost searching through notes mid-task.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner's confidence dropped whenever questions were worded differently or seemed long, sometimes skipping attempts altogether until prompted.

During trigonometry in Year 10, missed homework left gaps that resurfaced during multi-step bearings questions.

Recent Achievements

A Hornsby tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with worded problems now picks out key information and confidently applies the depreciation formula—something she hesitated to attempt before.

Another high schooler, after weeks of confusion with simultaneous equations, managed to solve them algebraically without hints, even remembering all necessary steps on his own.

At the primary level, a Year 5 student who used to guess answers when unsure has started underlining parts of questions and openly asks for help if stuck. In one session, he finished every question in section one with little to no prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hornsby Shire Library & Information Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hornsby Girls High School.
