As mentioned above, tutoring gives me more space to understand a student's difficulty. Thus, I believe that a tutor's biggest responsibility is to patiently guide the student through that difficulty, in other words, to unlock their ability to comprehend a lingual matter. Additionally, a tutor's role also encompasses helping the students gain more…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show the student that through perseverance they can be good at the subject, and to appreciate the subject's content for what it is. Another important feature is instilling confidence in the student as that is a skill that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. I am currently…

The most important thing I can do is give the student a sense of worth, confidence and the reassurance of their own abilities. In the future, my student may or may not forget the content but they will certainly remember the study habits and skills in which they approach learning. It is so important to provide not only academic independence but…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in themselves. When students feel supported and not judged, they are much more willing to ask questions and try again when something feels hard. It is also important to guide them rather than just give answers. A good tutor helps students understand how to think through…

Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. In this case, it is important for the tutor to encourage students and create a supportive learning environment in a way that helps the student see their progress. It is also important for a tutor to guide the student through a question, rather than just…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The most important thing is truly caring about the student's needs and not just delivering the content so that whatever needs to be taught is "taught". Firstly, I feel a tutor should make a student feel comfortable and trusted such that the latter never hesitates to ask a question and clear his/her doubts. I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

Inside Hunters HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jess focused on factorisation, including new methods and difference of two squares, as well as extending her skills with challenging algebra questions involving expanding and simplifying.

For Year 10, Alex tackled trigonometry problems using sin, cos, and tan, alongside working through bearings questions to apply these concepts in context.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student revised calculus fundamentals such as the chain rule and product rule while also consolidating understanding of derivatives and quadratic functions through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student revising fractions often relied on memory for times tables but skipped showing steps, which made it harder to spot calculation slips—"she could perform operations in her head, but missing working out led to confusion when reviewing errors."

In Year 11, one student tackling calculus felt pressure to finish quickly and overlooked feedback about checking sign errors in exponential derivatives.

For a Year 10 learner, reading complex word problems only once meant key details were missed; as noted: "extra time was spent backtracking instead of progressing." This sometimes left them feeling stuck mid-question.

Recent Achievements

A Hunters Hill tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to hesitate on worded maths problems now chooses the correct formula without prompting and explains her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student has shifted from getting stuck on multi-step algebra to independently checking her own work for errors and even attempting tougher factorisation questions unassisted.

In primary, one younger learner—who once waited passively—has begun taking initiative by jotting down notes and regularly asking clarifying questions whenever she's unsure.

Last session, that same student completed all assigned tasks before time was up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lane Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill Public School.
