Tutors must be able to demonstrate openness towards the needs of each student and help to better understand a students situation. I feel that the ability to carefully understand the certain needs and goals of each student and provide particular guidance and assistance a long the way to achieving these goals is crucial in tutoring, rather than…

Tutors must be flexible in their assistance to students through recognising individual learning preferences. Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. I have recent experience undertaking high school Extension 1 and 2 Mathematics,…

A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with an english tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. I am calm and caring, which I think is really important in tutoring,…

To me, the most essential role an english tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering…

In my opinion, an english tutor can act as the bridge between the student and the learning outcome. I feel the job of a tutor is to instill confidence in the child and inculcate a joy of learning the subject. My job as a tutor is to administer lessons to students in such a way to adapt to his capabilities and to meld the subject matter with his…

I believe an english tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and…

When students trust tutors, they become more engaged and benefit from intellectual discussions about the content. Additionally, the students feel motivated…

The most important thing I can do for a student is be flexible and patient with them and build a newfound sense of confidence. Being the avenue for that…

I believe that the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Inside NorthwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Olivia worked on converting decimals to fractions and solving area problems using visual models.

For Year 9, Ethan focused on linear algebra and interpreting bivariate data, including reading scatterplots.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled trigonometry concepts alongside finding surface area of complex solids, often drawing diagrams to support her understanding.

Recent Challenges

Several students in Years 9 and 10 struggled with showing clear, step-by-step working in algebra or measurement questions; as one tutor observed, "he still needs work on setting his work out properly and concisely," which led to missed marks when minor errors crept in.

In Year 12, a student tackling financial maths found formula substitutions confusing because she hadn't familiarised herself with the provided formula sheet before trials—this slowed her progress during practice tests.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided homework tasks on linear relationships, leaving gaps that showed up during class revision sessions when connections between variables were unclear.

Recent Achievements

One Northwood tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with linear algebra now working through multi-step equations without prompting, even explaining his reasoning out loud.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to leave questions blank on area and perimeter has started attempting every problem and asking follow-up questions when stuck.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student surprised her tutor by identifying different types of triangles correctly after struggling to distinguish them last week; she confidently named each one during their practice set.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenwich Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Greenwich Public School.
