A tutor should keep the lesson informative and entertaining and ensure that the student is fully engaged. He should identify the weaknesses of the student, and work with them to improve on these areas. One of my greatest assets is that I am extremely energetic and patient. I believe my energy keeps students engaged and motivated with the material,…

The most important thing according to myself would be the challenge to make a class interactive and make sure each student is engaging in the workshops and it is not just a one way street. I think have the patience to listen to each student's doubts and attend them as per their individual understanding level and then solve their concerns…

Explain topics in a way that the individual student understands, not just what works for everyone. Make tutoring less of a bore and hopefully enjoyable for students. Make them look forward to learning. Be approachable and friendly - a student can't learn if they don't feel they can go to the tutor and say they don't understand something.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning interesting and relatable. I find that when information is conveyed in a way that a student connects, they are more likely to understand it and remember the information. I'm enthusiastic and committed to tutoring students. I like to use different techniques until I…

I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student have, but I…

A tutor should gage the student’s level of understanding in order to adapt their teaching style and lesson plan. They should not only explain content, but most importantly, should aid in solving some practice problems step-by-step, before allowing them to complete some on their own. The more practice problems they see, the more comfortable they…

I think preparation for a class is very important. To make sure the class is going to be fulfilling and the student can learn something from it. Also to make sure the students enjoy the lessons and have a good time whilst learning. I think being someone that has studied the subjects and is still studying similar things in my degree, I can offer an…

Creating a positive and encouraging learning environment is essential for long-term academic growth. My strengths are clear communication, patience, and adaptability. I’m able to explain concepts in…

I believe that helping a student enjoy learning is the most important thing a tutor can do, as knowledge is a power no one can take away from you. Experiencing the joy of learning is a completely different world, and a tutor should work towards helping students appreciate it. Just open them up to learning anything and have them not think of it as a chore. They should be excited to learn new concepts. I believe it is important to create a safe space of learning. Oftentimes, students feel uncomfortable asking teachers about questions, or speaking out in front of class. Establishing your tutoring time as a space in which they can address their concerns and queries, without fear of looking stupid, is instrumental in gaining progress in learning,…

Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
