I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to either create of amplify one's enjoyment in studying a subject, as well as creating or increasing confidence and developing a positive mindset for students who are discouraged by a course. One of the most important things is to let students gain confidence in a subject they are struggling with by breaking down concepts into something easy to understand. It is also very important to create a supportive environment where students feel confident to try, even when the material feels difficult. I often see students give up on a question…

1. Be prepared. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to be prepared for the session. That includes preparing the lesson beforehand and getting everything ready. 2. Reviewing the fundamentals with the students. This means not jumping to advanced topics with the students when they might need a little refresher on the subject. In math, it is…

Mostly is the responsibility and the enthusiasm. As a tutor, they must do their responsibility to let students not only know the syllabus, but also have their critical and extend thinking about further questions. Tutors should prepare any references and the plans before the lesson, and be patient and polite to any students during the class. Give…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to lay a right foundation for the student to learn. Teaching them not to memorise formulae but to actually understand the theory behind the formula as higher levels of maths rely on prior knowledge that needs to be firmly understood. My strengths lie within my experience and personality. I…

I believe that helping students to know what they want to study in the future is the most important things. More specifically, through communication with students, I can provide experiences and advice for them so that they can have a clear mindset on what they should be focusing on. Thus, students will have the passion to study specific subject…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grow an understanding of analysis in their mind on how to approach and answer the relevant question. Students have to learn the material themselves, however a guidance is required to what is relevant material to read and where is the focus on the study. I feel that I can understand when a…

One of the important that a tutor can do for a student is being a good listener. Before heading towards the subject content the tutor needs to listen to their students. We need to know their mood and level of understanding in order to continue. There is no use in continuing with the subject if the student doesn't understand anything, so the tutor…

I opine that understanding the IQ and how to upgrade it is the key responsibility of a mentor. It is also imperative that a tutor should be patient if a child is not understanding a question and try to explore new ways to make it clear. I am very loving and patient as I know kids take time to understand the key concepts. Non-judgemental is the key…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

Adapt to their needs. As a tutor, your job is to assist in their learning experience, and get growth from the student. There is no one way to teach that is effective for everyone. Inside Huntleys CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on subtraction with borrowing using the algorithm method for 2–4 digit numbers, and practiced rounding as well as identifying greater than and less than symbols.

Year 8 student Jess focused on algebra homework involving factorisation (including negatives), and revised circle formulas by distinguishing between radius and diameter for circumference.

For Imogen in Year 7, recent lessons addressed converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, plus multiplying and dividing fractions to build confidence for word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student often avoided writing out full working for maths—especially on simple addition or times tables—preferring to count on fingers or ask for reassurance after each step. As one tutor observed, "she checked with me after every answer, even when she was correct." This led to slow progress during quizzes and left her uncertain when working alone.

In contrast, a Year 10 student tackling algebraic word problems tended to skim over key details in questions, sometimes missing critical hints or misreading specifications. During exam practice, this resulted in lost marks and repeated confusion about what the question actually required.

Recent Achievements

One Huntleys Cove tutor noticed a Year 9 student who, after weeks of uncertainty, began using number lines and worksheets to finally tackle multiplying and dividing negative numbers on her own—she now moves on to linear equations.

In Year 11 maths, Jess has shifted from relying heavily on prompts to independently correcting minor errors in complex algebra questions; she even started asking for tougher problems without hesitation.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to hesitate with times tables recently finished a worksheet of six times tables both in and out of order at full speed and with perfect accuracy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
