A tutor can create impact through helping their student believe that their hard-work pays off regardless of how challenging they think a subject might be and by teaching them about learning methods that are scientifically proven to be effective, thus making them independent and capable learners. I'm capable of trying out various techniques to meet…

I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

A good tutor should not only be able to solve problems efficiently, but more importantly, teach students the way to approach different problems. It is the way of thinking that matters in students' future learning. I am patient, responsible, patient and good at explaining problems in different approaches. During the time I tutored in UQ, I was…

A tutor's role should be to act as a role model that can act as an easy way to ask questions that might be hard to ask in a classroom. Encouraging students to grow at their own pace and give them the knowledge and confidence to go into not just exams but the future successfully. I am someone that learns by understanding how things work,…

The most important thing is to understand each student as a person so that you can personalise their learning and teach to their strengths. This comes with communicating and listening to what that student has to say to you. I like to ask students questions about their background with the subject, or related subjects and what they're hoping to…

Being able to explain concepts well to a student is arguably the most important thing. The best tutors are those who can explain and teach challenging ideas with relative ease in a short period of time because they have such good interpersonal skills. I believe my greatest strength is personal interaction with the student, and the ability to…

I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. And also make them feel confident in their abilities as well as teaching them a new confidence of autonomy when it comes to…

The most important things a tutor can do are: 1. Provide a safe and supportive environment where the student feels comfortable sharing their concerns. This helps to identify the student’s preferred learning style and areas to focus on. 2. Give the student the tools they need to learn on their own. Instead of just giving solutions, a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be easily available to them. Often times a student may wish to clarify a quick concept or question outside of tutor times for homework or other purposes. By being easily available to the student, a tutor can spare a few minutes of their day to support and promote the student's learning.…

Be a non-judgmental voice they can ask about any questions they have on the subject matter and be someone who can effectively listen and explain their own knowledge to the student. To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. Being supportive and patient because it can be difficult for a tutor to see how hard the high school level maths can be for the student. Tutors need to remember how they did when they did the same maths years ago for their HSC/school and how difficult it was back then as opposed to how simple it seems now. As a maths tutor, I understand how…

Local Reviews

Since Brendan has been working weekly with my daughter I have seen a big increase in her confidence, her understanding and sense of efficacy and mostly her willingness to do her maths which before she found abstract, confusing and "boring". She told me Brendan makes learning maths fun compared to my parental maths tips from "1874" (in her words). The monthly feedback and email support from Ezymaths is more than I had imagined when I thought about a tutor. For us, it is 100% worth the investment.

Inside InalaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia worked through calculations involving area, perimeter, and volume for school assignments, and then explored the basics of mensuration including composite volumes.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on coordinate geometry—calculating gradients and distances between points—and practiced using Pythagoras' theorem for both 2D and 3D problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aisha tackled simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination methods, and revised key algebra skills such as rearranging equations and expanding binomial products.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student relied heavily on calculators for basic operations during algebra revision, with notes highlighting, "needs working on different formats like decimals."

In a senior Maths session, one learner struggled to rearrange equations and hesitated to write out steps, especially when forming equations from worded problems; the tutor noted, "Need to improve forming the equations by putting the brackets to determine which order of operations goes first."

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student often forgot to bring their maths book and homework, leading to missed practice opportunities. The gap in organization left them unprepared during reading and numeracy activities.

Recent Achievements

One Inala tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle equations on his own now working through rearrangement steps with much less prompting—he's even started asking for extra practice questions when he gets stuck, rather than waiting passively.

A senior student has shown clear progress in matrix multiplication: she's noticeably quicker and more accurate than just two weeks ago, where she often mixed up the order of operations.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to add and subtract integers without help can now complete basic problems independently, finishing an entire worksheet without any hints this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inala Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mark's School.
