Impart upon a student not knowledge per se, but rather a desire to expand their own knowledge through self-directed learning. Learning and education should be a lifelong process, not one that ends when an individual completes their primary vocational education. Learning makes us grow and develop and look at things in different ways, and the desire…

the most important things a tutor can do for a student is uplift them knowledge wise as well as in person. To give them knowledge while instilling good habits and ethics. To make them grow into a better version of themselves. I'm good at keeping the class knowledgeable yet interesting at the same time. I have a sharp eye, so it is easier for me to…

A good tutor can instill confidence, curiosity and independence in their student, so that they will want to learn and improve even when studying on their own. A good tutor also provides the necessary resources for their student, so that they are able to work on their weaknesses in their own time. A good tutor helps to improve on the student's…

I think the most important things for a tutor is to make sure the student knows how there education will be valuable for adulthood. Also for tutors to be able to adapt for there students needs and learning styles, and also make sure the lessons are a mixture of tutors teaching and students asking and answering questions. I think I am reliable,…

Personalize learning and teach the student specific to their learning style. Its best to ensure they learn the info required in the way the student is capable of learning, rather than enforcing them to follow a default method. To never answer a question for them, and to make them believe in themselves more than they ever have. If tutoring was reduced to answering questions on the student's behalf, they would…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

The ability to explain concepts and solutions to problems in a way that the student can understand. What can look very simple to us can seem like a foreign language to our students, so the skill to break these down and make the student believe that what just looked impossible to them is actually very doable is invaluable as a tutor. Establishing…

Helen Millard, Inglewood

Inside InglewoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Angus focused on determining missing angles within geometric structures and calculating amounts given ratios.

For Year 8, Sienna worked through solving equations and revising key algebra skills like expanding and factorising expressions, using practice questions to build confidence.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jacob tackled finding the area and perimeter of composite shapes as well as converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages to strengthen both geometry and numeracy foundations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, homework was sometimes incomplete or missing key working—one tutor noted, "there was no working shown," which made it hard to check understanding of equations.

During a Year 10 geometry session, tiredness led to minimal progress and several questions were left unattempted when confusion arose, rather than trying best reasoning.

Messy handwriting also became an obstacle in algebra tasks: on one occasion, unclear layout meant previous steps couldn't be interpreted correctly during review.

In Year 7 probability work, careless notation on tree diagrams resulted in incorrect outcomes being recorded and misinterpretation later in revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Inglewood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for help—before an upcoming test, he now clearly communicated what topics needed revision and even requested specific notes for study.

A Year 8 student, after struggling with breaking shapes into parts for area calculations, began independently tackling complex problems once the process clicked.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to dislike tessellation not only completed challenging textbook exercises but also admitted the practice was starting to make sense—she finished the session able to explain her answers out loud without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inglewood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inglewood Primary School.
