I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and encourage independent learning. While improving grades is important, a great tutor should help students understand the underlying concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and feel comfortable asking questions. By creating a supportive and encouraging learning…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do is not just to help the student understand the subject and hand, but also to inspire and motivate the student so they become more passionate about learning and strive to put in their best effort. Learning is so much more than memorising the syllabus and I believe it is important to help student…

A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

A tutor should listen carefully, understand what the student already knows, and build on that foundation. Creating an open environment where students feel comfortable explaining their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student, is to believe in them. No matter what. My strongest trait is in never underestimating my students. A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. They encourage…

A tutor should give them the tools and the confidence to tackle any problem in the subject area. This means that the student should gain the skills to solve any problem in the subject area. The most important thing, according to me, is that the tutor is able to sympathise with the student. More often, in a class full of people, a student can feel like they're the only one who's falling behind. A tutor can help the student get out of that sort of thinking, and personally, at a one-on-one level, be involved in helping the student out…

A tutor must be able to build a students confidence, and not a dependence. For instance, lets say in physics, rather than teaching a student to memorise formula or answer, a good tutor will ensure the student understands the subject and how to apply it. This mindset is extremely crucial to building student confidence, and it stays in memory much…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
