A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

Most importantly have fun while learning. I am very creative with my teaching as every student has different pace of learning and solving things. Since I am a…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Thirdly, a tutor…

Clear concepts. Once your concepts are clear you can do any kind of question, sometimes even harder questions. I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Instead of spoon-feeding all the information, I expect students to brainstorm ideas. I motivate the student to think in various aspects which would help them broaden…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to be available for them, not just during tutoring sessions. A tutor is there to build confidence, in my opinion. Regardless of the comments of parents, teachers, siblings, a tutor should believe in their students and empower them to perform at the highest level capable. That is what the best tutors achieved for me, and what I continue to do for my own students today. I think the best tutors, particularly…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). A believe an effective tutor will support a student in a way that will eventually leave them comfortable, confident and prepared enough to no longer need the help of a tutor. The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. Once a student tells themselves that 'they can do it', there are innumerable…

If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
