I feel the most important thing for any tutor is to be able to communicate with its student effectively. A tutor should not make an assumption that just because students do not have any questions, they are understanding the topic. It is important to go around the class and ask questions individually to check on the understanding. Teaching has…

According to me, the most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to provide a friendly and fun loving environment so that the student does not have a load on his head for studies and can learn easily and can understand the concepts clearly. Flexibility and Patience are the two strengths of mine. I adjust myself to the different learning…

I reckon the most important things as a tutor are patience, encouragement and positive learning attitude. It is very crucial to build student's confidence and develop their interest in the subjects. My strengths as a tutor include patience, communication and tailor my teaching methods to each student's learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give confidence to a student and help guide them to enjoy the subject more. This is important as real change can only occur when the student is engaged and looking forward to learning and improving. My Strength as a tutor is the way in which I am able to alter my tutoring style to better fit my students…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

I think a tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going to help…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

-> Give many examples and illustrations apart from the theory part. -> Relate the subject with practical scenarios which makes the student keep a memory of the subject. -> Tutor must be patient, and polite enough to handle the basic queries of students. The best part of my teaching is giving more examples and illustrations. When you do more…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. I prefer to portray myself more a friend than a tutor and reassure my students…

With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. Understanding how children learn on an individual basis (including factoring in neurodivergency) rather than a blanket…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

I can adjust my teaching according to each student's situation and issues. tutor is a one who can create a child's future and at the same time can destroy it, tutor should be the one who should solve the rubix cube that is inside a student's mind. he should be thorough with his teaching so that when it comes to explaining things the student's shouldn't get confused with that. he/she should have all the tricks up their…

In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. A good tutor will work themselves out of a job. This is because a good tutor will not only teach the student the content but also how to learn. Therefore the student will be able to become independent of the tutor and then be able to teach other students. I am able to explain concepts clearly and concisely in a number of different ways. Thereby…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
