The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to become a close friend, a mentor that the student can fully trust and look up to, while at the same time, a tutor acts alongside with teachers and parents to understand a student's problems (if there is any) and improve student's performance academically. -I am professional: I have…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

Most students struggle to gain confidence in solving problems which in turn leads them to be unmotivated to study. Therefore, I believe that tutoring is not just teaching concepts but also building an environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from it. Leave them with a proper process with answering questions under time pressure. Make learning if not enjoyable at least tolerable, as learning new things is much harder if you don’t have any interest in it. Make your teaching digestible for the student depending on their level of understanding - not too easy not too hard. Breaking down complex…

I feel the most important thing for any tutor is to be able to communicate with its student effectively. A tutor should not make an assumption that just because students do not have any questions, they are understanding the topic. It is important to go around the class and ask questions individually to check on the understanding. Teaching has…

I think a tutor can give a student a lot but the most important thing is boosting the morale of the student. A teacher has the power to build up or tear down a students's self-esteem and make a student's day or ruin it in an instant. So, a teacher must fill the role of someone who has the best interests of every child at heart. The main focus…

Inside JacanaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mary worked on adding fractions with different denominators and tackled factors and multiples, finishing a tricky homework sheet together.

Year 8 student Bill focused on reducing fractions through targeted practice and discussed division in relation to multiplication, using examples from recent lessons.

For Year 9, Alex revised multiplying and dividing negative numbers, including a spelling test and vocabulary worksheet for literacy reinforcement within the session.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left English essays incomplete for homework, particularly after receiving a disappointing mark; as noted, "he seemed distressed and avoided starting the next essay," which led to missed opportunities for feedback and improvement.

In Year 7 Maths, another student consistently forgot to complete assigned revision sheets before a fractions test—this meant class time was spent on catch-up rather than tackling new material.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preferred to attempt only familiar problems in algebra revision, shying away from more challenging questions and limiting exposure to essential concepts needed for exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

One Jacana tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he openly voices questions when stuck on essay planning and even suggests what he'd like to review next.

A high schooler tackling long division had previously needed lots of guidance but can now finish complex worded problems independently after practicing with homework.

In a primary session, a Year 4 student who once got frustrated by spelling mistakes now takes them in stride and finishes tests with far fewer corrections, even celebrating when he spelled most tricky words right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Basketball Broadmeadows.
