The most important thing a tutor can do is help their students develop study skills so that they are equipped to learn anything by themselves. I am very patient and I always try to explain difficult concepts in ways that I found easier to understand when I was learning them (eg. acronyms and visual…

I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

I believe that the greatest affect that a good tutor can do for a student is to infatuate the student into the subject, meaning to truly engage and interest the student in the topic. Once this happens the student will grow a love for the subject, leading them to career paths regarding this subject. This will more importantly grow a work ethic for…

As a tutor, the ability to get a student invested in the topic they are learning and keep it sustained by making the process an organized effort through active conversations and dialogue is vital in any classroom. Being a student myself, I understand the mindset a student has when trying to mentally grasp a concept and use it to solve problems.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to truly dedicate themselves to the student, even beyond paid time to consistently ensure their growth. I think I am very skilled at creating a deep personal connection and using that to make sure my students feel comfortable to ask any questions or express any uncertainties they…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is instill confidence in their students so they can tackle problems they were previously unfimiliar with on their own, as well as perform in high stress environments, such as tests. The best way to do this in my opinion is to go through practice problems with the students untill they fully…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student confidence that they can complete problems on their own and be successful in their studies. I remember how disheartening it was when I couldn't understand or effectively answer problems in school. Especially at a younger age, academic success is a value that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them patience and kindness. The most important a tutor can do for a student is to identify the student's unique learning style so I would be able to present information in a way that has the greatest effect, and make an impactful difference to the student's learning. It has to come from my intention to teach and improve the student's quality of life. Without it, teaching will be bland, inauthentic, and forgettable. It also has to come from giving students the ability to think and solve challenging problems by themselves. Without it, the student will not develop independency or grit to solve life's ordeal. One…

A very personal thing I like to teach my students is to pay attention to the small details. Each and every word, each and every equation. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to understand that the concepts and techniques they are learning are much less frightening and overwhelming when they are boiled down and simplified into manageable components. When tackling a problem, the more aspects we don't understand, the more likely we are to panic and deem…

Teach student life. Being kind human is better than an arrogant genius. I look up to my mentors, who not only taught me skills, but also gave me their thoughts and their experience. Instil confidence, teach problem solving and critical thinking that can be applied across all academic areas, and encourage resilience when students are struggling, reiterating that it is okay to not understand straight away and that persisting is the most important thing. Determining why and how a student may be having trouble with a concept, and…

Inside Kelvin GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Angus focused on probability concepts, including two-way tables and Venn diagrams, with practice questions to build confidence ahead of his assessment.

In Year 9, Lina worked through trigonometry topics such as sine and cosine rules using example problems, and also tackled compound interest calculations involving both direct and reverse scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jessica covered advanced Specialist Mathematics skills by practising integration techniques—like u-substitution, integration by parts, and partial fractions—through step-by-step walkthroughs of homework and revision problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student arrived at a recent lesson without having completed her assigned Optimisation homework, saying she was too busy; as the tutor noted, "she is yet to do last week's homework…as well as other exercise questions." This pattern left gaps in understanding, especially when unfamiliar integration techniques appeared on exams.

In Year 10, another student struggled to start problem-solving tasks independently—without a hint, progress stalled and practice outside lessons remained limited.

For Year 7 algebra revision, one learner frequently confused positive and negative signs: "minor mistakes kept creeping in," slowing feedback and review.

Missed practice or incomplete preparation often meant time was spent re-covering basics instead of advancing new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Kelvin Grove tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to start integration problems, now jumps straight in independently and selects the right method on her own.

A Year 10 student has begun openly asking questions about mock test errors—something she avoided previously—so she can clarify tricky points before her upcoming exam.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through worded maths questions now takes time to extract key details before solving, showing real care and accuracy by reading each question twice before answering.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Grange Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kelvin Grove State College.
