From both my own experiences of being tutored, and being a tutor myself, the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create the space for them to be honest when they don't understand something, or when an explanation isn't working for them. When this is achieved, the tutor can tailor their resources, preparation and…

Tutors can do so much for students. To choose a few, a tutor should be honest and always try their best to educate and assist the student to their best capacity. Moreover, allowing the student to be okay with failing and making mistakes as part of the journey without feeling ashamed is critical to building their self-confidence and understanding…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to understand how the student learns. By knowing the students learning preferences and ability the tutor can tailor their approach to individuals rather than utilising a blanket approach, which can often leave some students behind. My strengths lie in the ability to communicate ideas or…

I believe it is very important for a tutor to empower students and allow them to feel confident in their own ability to learn and succeed in their academic career. It is important for tutors to nurture intrinsic motivation within their students to allow them to feel validated by their own personal growth. As a tutor, one of my strengths would be…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make sure that the student learns properly, especially from their own mistakes. I believe the most important role of a tutor is to help students gain confidence while developing a genuine understanding of the subject. A great tutor listens to each student’s needs, provides clear guidance, encourages questions, and creates a positive environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn. Ultimately, a tutor should…

Likewise, a tutor should always work to teach lifelong problem-solving and learning skills while giving students the tools and encouragement to use these skills to excel in their learning. It is important for tutors to understand that not every student is the same and they learn at different paces. I think that there are two important things a tutor can do for a student. Firstly, a tutor should be there to supplement their student’s work at school. A tutor should guide the student through their school studies and provide an additional, but supplementary, source for self-growth. Secondly, a tutor should inspire the student to set goals.…

Inside Kemps CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Enrique focused on probability and explored geometry concepts, including classifying shapes.

For Year 9 Vangie, lessons included rearranging algebraic equations to make a given variable the subject and converting between measurement units.

In Year 10, Amaan practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, and worked through coordinate geometry problems using past test questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student struggled to show working consistently in algebra questions; as the tutor observed, "he's good at doing these questions in his head and on a calculator, but working out is where he will get the marks he deserves." This meant correct answers were sometimes given without evidence for partial credit.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student often needed to refer back to examples rather than recall methods independently when tackling new variations of familiar problems.

In senior maths, another student hesitated to draw diagrams for worded problems, slowing progress and making errors more likely during complex geometry tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kemps Creek noticed some real shifts this term. One Year 11 student, who previously hesitated with differentiation, recently tackled composite functions and applied the product rule to differentiate more complex expressions without needing reminders.

In a Year 10 session, a student who used to rush through multiple choice questions began slowing down to identify and fix "silly mistakes," showing new attention to detail that wasn't there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner surprised their tutor by recalling how to approach a money problem they hadn't practised in weeks and completed it independently from start to finish.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Valley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kemps Creek Public School.
