Try to make them feel confident in themselves and build intuition. Maths is hard and it is easy to feel discouraged; so being able to boost morale and keep them going is important in them being successful. I really do try to be engaging; I try to speak to students as an equal. I think talking to them as regular people and have regular…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to listen patiently and understand the student's real challenges -- whether the issue comes form gaps in knowledge, unclear concepts, or lack of exam techniques. The role of a good tutor requires to guide students through each stage of learning while showing areas that need improvement. One of…

I believe the most important aspect is encouraging learning and allowing students to explore creative aspects of learning freely. I believe that the way you are taught and the encouragement you receive along the way has a significant impact on a student's performance. Hence, I believe that teaching a student to be confident in themselves and their…

Understanding and learning about the child's needs and adapting your teaching style to best suit their needs. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship in which the child knows that the tutor is there to provide them with the best support they can offer to aid their learning. I believe that I am a very child-centered tutor. I believe…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is treating them like a friend, making them realize the importance of education to the students like them, and making them aware about the competition that is to be faced by them when they pursue their future goals. Most importantly, I would say one has to teach student making them…

Listening to the students is the most important things a tutor can do. Not everyone can study at the same pace or method. While I have my method of teaching, it helps the student to be more comfortable to study in a way that they are familiar or works for them. I can be as soft or hard as required to teach my students. Listening to them and…

To achieve this, I create a welcoming and supportive environment where my student feels comfortable asking questions and seeking help when needed. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student would be able to understand the difficulties that a student faces and use this to help them understand the content. Along with this, the tutor should also be able to confidently show open communication and collaboration with the student to ensure lessons are as effective as possible Not…

I will instill pride and confidence in students that they can be successful. Cultivating a growth mindset is important, a belief that small steps progress into achieved milestones. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

Other than imparting the lessons in school, I think being able to empathize with the students is key in effective teaching. As a matter of strategy, what I will do is to meet them where they are academically, then prepare a plan and implement it to be able to meet our goal(s). I have the ability to relate with young kids well. Raising three…

First of all, the tutor must believe in the student’s capabilities. The most important thing then is to be patient and thorough, and build a trusting relationship to allow the student to come to you with questions. I am patient and find simplistic ways to explain things according to the student’s way of thinking. I take the time to ensure that…

The most important thing for a tutor is to engage with the student in a way different than their teachers at school. Tutor should emotionally understand the student first. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are understanding them and communicating effectively. This means adapting their teaching style instead of using a fixed approach, so it better suits each student’s needs and helps them learn…

I can establish a trusted relationship with my student because once they feel comfortable around me, they will not hesitate to ask questions and will be confident to share their interests and gain new knowledge. For me, the important thing that I can do for my students is helping them to build confidence. I guess most students tend to hire tutors not because they are not good at the subject somehow, but because they lack confidence and interest in it. Therefore, what I can do is to activate their interests and build up confidence in my way. There are…

The most important goal for a tutor is to spark students' interest in the subject. Tutoring is not only about assisting with a student's grade. In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

A tutor needs to always be supportive. A student needs a tutor because (s)he wants help. Sometimes not getting a good result can be frustrating for them. A tutor needs to make sure that the students are motivated to improve. I'm good at understanding why the students are stuck, whether it is not knowing how to apply a formula or weak algebraic…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel focused on simple and compound interest calculations in Financial Mathematics and practised problems on measurement, including perimeter and area.

Year 11 student Emily worked through key trigonometric concepts such as the unit circle, radian measure, and applied the sine rule to solve non-right-angled triangle questions using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack tackled Specialist Mathematics topics by solving induction proofs—including divisibility—and practiced matrix operations like multiplication and finding inverses with guided textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, difficulties with sentence structure and paragraph flow meant written pieces were sometimes hard for the reader to follow; as a tutor noted, "all of the right information was there, but often in an order that meant a lot of jumping around."

For a Year 10 mathematics student, interpreting assignment questions accurately proved challenging—occasionally leading to incomplete or misdirected responses.

In senior maths (Years 11–12), several students received feedback on not applying tips from previous sessions when tackling advanced quadratic and matrix problems; "needs improvement with solving higher order & complex multiplication of matrices" captured this missed opportunity for growth. This resulted in repeated errors despite prior guidance.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington tutor noticed a Year 8 student who used to rush through assignment questions now pausing to break them down and ask clarifying questions before starting—something he hadn't done a few months ago.

In high school maths, another student who previously struggled with quadratic equations is now confidently using both factorisation and the quadratic formula, checking each answer independently.

Meanwhile, a primary-aged learner has shifted from copying text for assignments to consistently rewriting information herself. Last session, she researched material and summarised it without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Norwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Memorial School - Junior Primary Campus.
