If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

I believe a tutor's purpose is to guide a student towards their ideal score by understanding how each student learns individually and applying different techniques to achieve that. My target is to enable students to develop their own understanding of a topic so that they can apply it themselves to further questions without assistance. I am patient…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. This kind of motivation and encouragement can then build into other parts of the student's life thus…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn in a way that maximises their potential. Everyone learns in a different way and I believe a tutor can find what is best for the individual. A tutor needs to be able to teach a student to be able to independently work through challenges. Whilst someone who has…

A factor that I consider to be profound as a tutor is developing an open and positive environment. I believe it's important for a student to feel that they can communicate with me regarding any matter, and that I'm there to help them as more than just a tutor! To add, another significant factor is organisation and communication. I believe a tutor…

Some of the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student are to boost their self-esteem, adjust to their preferred method of learning, and simplify difficult ideas. To truly let the students to understand concepts. Yes, achieving high marks and grades is important, but it shouldn't override the understanding of concepts in curriculums. Not only allowing students to have the ability to effectively answer exam questions, but also most importantly to let them recognise how these knowledge points can connect from…

I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
