I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence. In a classroom, it's easy for students to lose confidence if they're afraid of getting answers wrong or feel left behind. From my own experience, I know how much a great tutor can change a student's mindset. I wouldn't be where I am today without tutors who believed…

Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

A tutoring environment differs from a school environment by the personal connection and the attention to detail from the tutor. As a tutor, I believe it is important to connect deeply with each student, paying close attention to if they fully understand each topic and if they feel confident and motivated with their work. I believe a personal…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be able to understand their needs and feelings towards their studies. The same approach does not work for all students, so it is important to adapt to to each individuals needs in order to give them the best teaching possible, and inspire confidence in themselves. I think my best…

A tutor should focus on helping students truly understand concepts, use practical methods to improve retention, and encourage independent thinking rather than just memorisation. Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. Over time, I have learnt that my enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, it kindles a love for the subject in the…

A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

-I believe it is a tutor's duty to make sure the student understands the concept thoroughly and precisely as possible,. -A tutor can always jump to the basics of a particular concept if it is not clear for the student. The most important thing would be to instill interest. A tutor can give a student the confidence to work independantly. Teach students on improving their strengths and minize their weakness. Enable them to quickly understand and solve problems with strong basic knowledge. A tutor can help a student to set high expectations and work towards them, making their stuggle easier. I believe higher studies…

Besides teaching concepts and helping students solve problems, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate students. Inside KogarahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex revised factors and multiples, tackled missing angle problems in geometry, and practiced comparing and creating equivalent fractions.

For Year 9, Olivia worked through surface area of prisms and cylinders along with an introduction to indices using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ryan focused on financial maths topics like simple interest calculations and applied index laws across a range of questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student working on indices and equations sometimes left working steps off the page, as noted: "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This made it tough to spot where misunderstandings happened.

In Year 11 Financial Maths, one student leaned heavily on calculator routines for compound interest but struggled to set up questions without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner practicing fraction-to-decimal conversions had difficulty keeping their written layout organized—misaligning columns led to confusion when comparing results. The extra time spent sorting out formatting mistakes meant less energy for grasping new concepts in later parts of the lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Kogarah tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to avoid complex algebra now asking for harder simultaneous equations and successfully creating the equation of a line from two coordinates.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who'd struggled with applying multiple formulas managed to solve trigonometry problems independently by choosing between Pythagoras' theorem, Sine, and Cosine rules—something she previously hesitated to attempt without step-by-step guidance.

In Year 5, one child who always guessed when comparing fractions is now pausing to work through each comparison and even explained her thinking aloud before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kogarah High School.
