Be present and patient. Being patient is a given, as learning takes time and effort. But being present is underrated, in my opinion. Not just in physical presence, but in emotional presence. students need someone who believes that they can do this, whether its themselves or their tutors. Aside from that, I would again say that tutors need to…

I think the most important thing is to be patient an understanding of the fact that the students are new to whatever concepts they are learning, and that every student needs personalised teaching to optimise their benefits and learning from the tuition, whether that involves detailed breakdowns and guidance, and constant encouragement. Personally speaking, I believe a tutor needs to have great patience, a certain level of flexibility, and the ability to inspire and motivate students while building up their confidence. I highly value and encourage critical and independent thinking. A tutor should guide students to think first, and then take them slowly through the process and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence and help them believe in their ability to improve. Academic support is important, but equally vital is the emotional support that motivates a student to keep going even when they’re struggling. A good tutor doesn’t just provide answers — they teach students…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make studying not feel like a boring task. The more fun a class is, the more likely it is that the student will put in extra effort in the subject. Also, an environment with healthy competition is necessary for maximising the output of each individual. As I have recently completed my schooling, I…

Tutors must prepare for teaching prior to the session. Briefly revising a topic that the tutor may have not covered in a couple of years will allow the tutor to spend more quality teaching time with the student. A tutor must also be responsive. If a student is contacting their tutor with a question, even if its outside of the specified teaching…

I'm totally the opposite of boring. I smile a lot. I've…

Give their time in order to further assist the student and go the extra mile instead of doing just enough. This can heavily impact the student's learning experience as they know that there is someone willing to help them improve. Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
