The most important thing would be adaptability and patience. A key role as a tutor is helping students to build up their confidence and their skillset in being able to grow as a student in a manner that works for each individual student. Learning new skills can be challenging and so as a tutor, I listen intently and encourage the students to be…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to nurture a student’s genuine curiosity and foster their willingness to overcome challenges through problem-solving and critical thinking. These skills not only support academic success but also prepare them to navigate and thrive in real-world situations. The ability to recognise and adapt to…

As tutor, the greatest impact that one can have is that of helping a student better shape and sharpen, not only their understanding of a subject but also their attitudes and philosophies towards learning. That is, to help positively reframe their perspective in a way that helps them best succeed I would say my greatest strengths as a tutor are…

Focus on what the student is understanding. While it is easy to just teach content to a student it doesn't necessarily mean that they are absorbing all of that content. As a tutor is it important to work alongside the student to ensure that they are understanding of everything you teach. A student can only improve if they have a secure knowledge…

I believe the most important factor is allowing students freedom of answering a question in their own way and not limiting them to the words of a textbook. As a tutor, my biggest strength is understanding the mindset of my students and adapting to their needs. Secondly, I have a very calm personality that equips me with skills to handle any…

A tutor has an integral part of a student's schooling journey. Obviously, a tutor is going to assist students with their academic needs, but there are also other important duties that a tutor must fulfill. From my own experience, I can say that a great tutor seeks to understand the student's ambitions. This includes but is not limited to…

This entails recognizing the individual learning approaches of students, addressing their specific requirements, and aiding them in cultivating self-assurance in their mathematical skills. Furthermore, creating a positive and supportive learning atmosphere is…

A tutor should ensure that a student does not simply memorize material, but that they understand it. Understanding is not enough, however, and so I believe tutors should actively focus on allowing students to apply concepts that they have learned to consolidate their understanding and comprehension of the source material. It is important for…

To really understand where the student is coming from. Far too often throughout my own life I have been frustrated with the way in which teachers and tutors treat you as just another student and bulldoze you with an answer before you've even managed to get you question out. To be able to adapt their teaching style to better suit the student. To…

I believe that a tutor's most important job is to build a student's confidence. Most particularly when a student is struggling, building confidence allows them to feel that they can try and fail, which is essential to learning. With more advanced students, confidence allows them to stretch themselves even further. I believe I have developed a…

I believe that a tutors role is to build a student's capability and confidence to engage with and excel in the materials they are provided with in their studies. For some students this means focusing on fundamentals that may have been overlooked, for some this means teaching them to apply what they know to new contexts and for some this simply…

I believe, the best things a tutor can do for a student is to personalise lessons to fit the learning style of each student, help them identify their strengths and teach to their strengths. Not all students are modelled the same way. Some are able to learn by studying the books while others require a lot of practice. Hence I believe that teaching the student how to study based on his or her strengths is the best thing a tutor can do and I will strive to achieve that at all costs. I spend a lot of time communicating with the student…

As briefly mentioned in the question above, the most important things tutor can do for a student is to not make the experience another class that "drags on". Interacting with the student on a level where he/she can enjoy or be intrigued by the work is essential. To do this, you cannot let the theories from a textbook stay as theories.…

Inside LalorTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aiden completed an assessment and then focused on understanding decimals, using number lines to help visualise place value.

Year 8 student Emily worked through linear relations, including finding gradients and x- and y-intercepts, followed by graphing equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jason prepared for his exam by practising algebraic techniques such as simplifying algebraic fractions and working with perfect squares and the difference of squares.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions, giving up quickly when unsure—"too many times he has just given up when the question is too hard or he does not understand it." This reluctance meant missed opportunities to develop resilience and left gaps in understanding, especially with worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 biology student struggled to summarise processes like mitosis and meiosis; lack of interest made recall difficult and diagrams incomplete.

In Year 4 maths, one child often skipped drawing graphs properly when tired, resulting in messy work that made later revision confusing and less effective.

Recent Achievements

One Lalor tutor noticed a real shift in Priya's approach to her high school maths—she now remembers to label units in geometry problems, something she often overlooked before, and tackles simultaneous equations confidently using both substitution and elimination methods.

Another high school student who used to get stuck on worded algebra questions has begun deciphering them independently after a few guided examples, moving from hesitation to self-correction during sessions.

Meanwhile, Sophie (primary) improved her times tables speed dramatically, dropping from 41 seconds to just 31, and now carefully checks tricky ones instead of rushing through.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Peter Lalor Secondary College.
