Definitely to be patient and to never assume knowledge as known or simple. Further to focus on not just content, but also mark schemes for maximum success. I would be a great tutor because I combine strong academic ability with genuine care for the people I’m teaching. Academically, I have a solid foundation in Mathematics, Economics, and…

I believe the most significant aspect of a tutor is integrity and maintaining a level of respect to my students. In supporting my students, besides academic help, mental supports are also critically vital, hence it is crucial for me to ensure my students are well-balanced of both academic and social aspects. Regarding teaching, I believe I can…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. Whether that may be to help them catch up in certain subjects, to reach for top marks for their desired high school or university or in need of motivation to study in creating habits. I believe that the most important thing will be for the tutor…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. The important things a tutor can do for their students include making the subject enjoyable and empowering students to reach a point from where they can arrive at solutions on their own. The first and foremost task for tutors is to make the subject more enjoyable than what the students perceive it to be. Once the students start enjoying the…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. Inside Lane CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jessica focused on mastering times tables and tackling area and perimeter problems using worded scenarios.

For Year 9, Ethan practised solving equations involving x² as well as applying the Pythagoras theorem to both direct distance and three-dimensional contexts, often using diagrams to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zoe explored applications of trigonometric functions—solving for unknown sides with sine, cosine, and tangent—and worked through angle of elevation and depression questions in real-world settings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student often missed negative signs when rearranging equations—"be more careful with the positive and negative signs," as a tutor observed—which led to incorrect solutions even after correct initial steps.

A Year 9 student showed hesitation expressing probability answers as decimals or fractions, sometimes switching formats mid-question, which muddled final answers.

In senior trigonometry, confusion persisted between cosine and tangent when identifying sides of triangles, resulting in misapplied formulas and lost marks.

Meanwhile, a primary learner avoided showing long division working, likely from lack of confidence with times tables; this meant partial answers but no path for error-checking or feedback.

Recent Achievements

One Lane Cove tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated with word problems now breaking down multi-step questions independently and spotting which details are relevant.

In Year 10, a student who used to confuse the gradient and y-intercept in linear equations can now correctly identify each part and graph the line without prompting.

Another recent session with a primary schooler showed real change: after weeks of struggling, she remembers far more of her times tables and tackled two-digit multiplication with much less reliance on written prompts, even choosing to try a harder problem herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lane Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lane Cove Public School.
