The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to improve their confidence in problem deconstruction. This skill is universally applicable and can can be use even after the leaving the tutoring session in different part of study or life, I vastly improved from year 10 to year 12 and into university in all my subjects. Going from…

Simplify concepts in an understandable personalized way for them to understand at their own rythm. A tutor can relieve the preassure of due dates or schedules from the classroom and advance along with the student. According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand his/her situation and academic difficulties. It's important to relate to the student and their problem in order to be able to solve it. Another very important thing is trust. There has to be mutual trust for a knowledge transfer to happen. I believe that every…

1. Give them a correct perspective 2. Encourage them to do better and try things, even if they do wrong they should be. That's how they will learn from mistakes and excel. I think I focus on basics, and can see from the perspective of a student. What the student wants and how the students wants is something I think can gauge…

As I said earlier, the most important thing a teacher can do is make the students interested in a particular subject. The teachers can also guide them about what is the right thing to do in the future. My strength as a teacher is that I can explain things really well. Mathematics is my core competency and I believe that I have the ability to…

I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

It is important to raise the student's interest in study as interest is the premise for the student to invest time and effort. What is also important is that the tutor teach the student approaches and techniques to study, not only what's in the textbook. I also consider it prudent for tutors to have patience with students and to be…

A tutor can show students how challenging questions are done and prepare them well for their exams/tests. Plus, encourage them to put in their full potential to score well in exams. I am free to explain any concept, numerous times until the student has really understood. My job is to make sure they know what they are actually doing. I try to give…

Teach them how to think for themselves and how to be critical of any situation so that they may find answers on their own. Teach them that values are more important than success in life. The most important thing is identifying strengths, weaknesses and comfort zone of the student. The teacher in the comfort zone of student should help student work on his weaknesses and help the student identify his own strengths/passion and help him pursue it. I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. I think learning from someone showing you is so much more powerful than just…

Building confidence so a student tells themselves "I can do this if I try." But equally, making sure that confidence never stops them from asking for help when stuck. Both matter. Beyond that, earning the student's trust comes first. A student who trusts their tutor stops hiding confusion and starts engaging honestly. That is when real learning…

Inside Lane Cove WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and discuss areas for improvement.

In Year 9, Tom focused on probability with single events and practiced constructing and interpreting linear graphs from algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ruby tackled simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, as well as exploring investments and loans in the context of credit cards.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly arrived without her test book, which limited review of past assessments and slowed feedback on algebra exam technique; as a tutor noted, "she needed reminders to set out all working clearly and avoid redoing calculations."

In Year 7 mathematics, one student hesitated to write down solutions, preferring mental calculations even when asked for full working. This habit left logic gaps that made it harder to spot where confusion with negatives crept in.

Meanwhile, a primary student twice missed submitting writing homework, so lesson time shifted from skill-building to catching up—momentum was lost before ideas could really take shape.

Recent Achievements

A Lane Cove West tutor noticed Harry, a Year 9 student, now lays out his answers systematically in maths, where he used to jumble steps and lose marks for working errors.

Georgia, who struggled with visualising three-dimensional objects last term, recently translated elevation drawings into accurate 3D shapes during her session without prompting.

In English, a senior student who was previously hesitant to accept feedback on essays has started actively rewriting topic sentences and openly asks for suggestions when revising her discursive writing pieces.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Chatswood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mowbray Public School.
