Help them learn in a different way! Help them see things from a different perspective! As a Queer non-binary writer, I can introduce them to new thoughts and ideas around certain traditional aspects of writing and reading. What I want is for my students to walk away with even more understanding of their certain topic/study area and that they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their full potential. This is achieved by helping them to enjoy learning about the subject that they are studying. It is important for a tutor to be engaging and passionate so the student is eager to learn and is excited to come to lessons. A tutor also needs to be patient…

I consider effective communication to be the most important thing a tutor can have for a student, as this one quality filters into all aspects of the job as a tutor. This allows the tutor to gain an understanding of the specific goals or concerns of the student to then maximise the use of sessions, allowing for substantial growth. I believe my…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. With students, a tutor should not only be considered a teacher but also a friend who they can inquire about topics and issues which a tutor has already experienced and can be an assistance of. My strengths are a…

As a tutor, the most important thing for me is to understand the challenges faced by a student. By empathizing with their struggles, I can develop an effective approach that helps build the student's confidence and foster critical thinking. This approach should be tailored to the student's needs, ensuring that they feel supported and motivated to…

The tutor must understand the student. Some students try really hard to learn but may fail to show successful results. The tutor must understand this, assure the student that he/she is making progress, and guide the student every inch of the way. Second, the tutor must consider the pursuits of the students as his/her own personal endeavor as…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they can…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make sure…

One of the most important things a tutor can do, other than assisting them to excel in all areas of learning is to instil them with the confidence to learn. This is crucial as it allows students to believe that school work/learning is to be something that is fun rather than a “chore†or boring. Once this occurs, the student begins to engage…

Inside Lavender BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava worked through challenging Maths Olympiad questions, revisited area of triangles with decimal and fraction multiplication, and practised finding unknown values using diagrams.

Year 8 student Mia focused on properties of quadrilaterals and triangles by applying congruency tests to homework problems, and briefly reviewed composite area questions from her school set.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam revised trigonometry ratios and tackled exam-style problems involving sine rule and non-right angled triangles for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, hesitation to attempt problem-solving questions—especially those involving algebra—sometimes led to deferring to decimals instead. "She seemed slightly hesitant to attempt the problem solving questions involving algebraic techniques," noted a tutor.

In a senior revision session, one student focused mainly on teacher-provided easy exercises and avoided more challenging graphing and congruency proofs, missing key opportunities for deeper learning.

Another high schooler's layout in geometry made it difficult to spot calculation errors until the end, slowing progress.

After setbacks or mistakes, reluctance to review test papers limited understanding of where improvements were needed most.

Recent Achievements

A Lavender Bay tutor recently saw a Year 10 student achieve a much higher Olympiad result than before, thanks to better time management and the ability to quickly review her mistakes—something she struggled with previously.

In Year 12, Charlie, who once hesitated with quadratic functions, now rapidly factors three-term equations and uses the quadratic formula independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, Xander has started solving division problems on his own using small toys for groups and even mastered multiplication facts like 4 Ă— 3 without relying on his table for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cameragal Montessori School, North Sydney Campus.
