The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide personalized attention and guidance, to help them understand concepts deeply, and to inspire confidence in their abilities. A tutor should also be patient and supportive, encouraging students to ask questions and take risks in their learning. Additionally, a tutor can help…

motivation, encouragement, and guidance. for me, tutoring is not about giving a subject material and that's it, the parents will leave with their child, therefore, you have to be trustworthy, and show them that he will be better not only as a student but also as a human. other than technical abilities, motivation and enthusiasm to the students,…

I have always felt the most important thing to do for them is to - rid them of the fear of that subject and making them self sufficient. I study pure mathematics in university , because I see a certain kind of beauty in natural sciences , therefore tend to bring my student to appreciate the language of the universe in a light they probably…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include: 1. Foster Understanding: A tutor’s primary role is to help the student grasp the subject matter. This means breaking down complex ideas into simpler parts, providing clear explanations, and offering different perspectives until the student understands. 2. Build Confidence: By…

It is important for a top achieving student to become academically independent; he must learn how to learn things for themselves and what it really means to understand a concept. A good tutor, I believe can help students become academically independent by trying to build confidence in the student by affirming their self-worth and helping them…

I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

As a tutor the best thing to do for the student is to be patient, resilient and adaptable. As each student has different learning styles you need to be observant and communicate with them as much as possible to ensure that they are optimising their learning. Furthermore, the tutor must be enthusiastic about the subject, if the student sees that…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster independent thinking and create a safe space for questions. A tutor should not only improve grades but also equip them with skills and strategies they can apply beyond the tutoring sessions. One of my key strengths is patience. Communication, patience, understanding. Clearly explaining the topic with either simple or appropriate terms depending on the student's level. Most important thing a tutor can do for students is being able to bridge the gap between the starting points and the expected performance to succeed, mainly through patience and adaptability. While obviously a tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. I think a good tutor is supposed to firmly believe that every child can achieve success in each subject regardless of any individual difficulties even with special needs. Based on that mindset, a good tutor also need to provide motivation, learning strategies, monitoring and other generic skills such as problem-solving skills and so on to the…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is none other than making the student truly understand the solution to a problem, and the understanding of how the solution is built up, instead of forcing the student to memorize a certain formula to solve a problem, teaching them to recognize patterns as well as using simple…

My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. Inside Lavender BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava worked through challenging Maths Olympiad questions, revisited area of triangles with decimal and fraction multiplication, and practised finding unknown values using diagrams.

Year 8 student Mia focused on properties of quadrilaterals and triangles by applying congruency tests to homework problems, and briefly reviewed composite area questions from her school set.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam revised trigonometry ratios and tackled exam-style problems involving sine rule and non-right angled triangles for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, hesitation to attempt problem-solving questions—especially those involving algebra—sometimes led to deferring to decimals instead. "She seemed slightly hesitant to attempt the problem solving questions involving algebraic techniques," noted a tutor.

In a senior revision session, one student focused mainly on teacher-provided easy exercises and avoided more challenging graphing and congruency proofs, missing key opportunities for deeper learning.

Another high schooler's layout in geometry made it difficult to spot calculation errors until the end, slowing progress.

After setbacks or mistakes, reluctance to review test papers limited understanding of where improvements were needed most.

Recent Achievements

A Lavender Bay tutor recently saw a Year 10 student achieve a much higher Olympiad result than before, thanks to better time management and the ability to quickly review her mistakes—something she struggled with previously.

In Year 12, Charlie, who once hesitated with quadratic functions, now rapidly factors three-term equations and uses the quadratic formula independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, Xander has started solving division problems on his own using small toys for groups and even mastered multiplication facts like 4 Ă— 3 without relying on his table for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cameragal Montessori School, North Sydney Campus.
