The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. My strengths are my simplistic and analogy-based approach to explaining concepts, and my emphasis on exam technique that allows students to feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I am an expert in Math and Programming and their academic content -- I know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out. I…

Education is very important in today's societies, many parents hire tutors to help their children catch up or keep up in school subjects where they are having difficulties and have fallen behind their peers. Tutors can help a student in one or many subjects depending upon the child’s needs and the tutor’s expertise. "My strength is my…

What I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a healthy and suitable learning environment. Also since students are more likely to do better when they feel encouraged and…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. Tutors must be able to demonstrate openness towards the needs of each student and help to better understand a students situation. I feel that the ability to carefully understand the certain needs and goals of each student and provide particular guidance and assistance a long the way to achieving these goals is crucial in tutoring, rather than…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

I can build my students engagement with and appreciation of the subject (many students find school boring or purposeless and I make a point to spark more joy in learning by integrating key notes of relevance into every lesson). While obviously a tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. Giving a student an interest in the subject will make them improve their grades even by thereself as they will enjoy studying and seek…

I consider that the most important thing that you can do for a student is help them to see the use of the things that they are learning and make them understand why it is important to learn these things. Tutors must be flexible in their assistance to students through recognising individual learning preferences. Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. I have recent experience undertaking high school Extension 1 and 2 Mathematics,…

Inside LilyfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia practised using Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths and worked on rearranging equations in geometry problems.

In Year 9, Keira focused on solving challenging trigonometry questions and reviewed her recent test on probability, also revisiting how to simplify and expand algebraic expressions.

Greta, in Year 11, concentrated on differentiation—covering the product, chain, and quotient rules—and extended this by finding derivatives of inverse functions during calculus practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to bring their maths homework, so written work was scattered and difficult to track—"work is in one place only if homework comes every lesson."

In Year 10, a student tended to skip writing out working for easier algebra questions; as noted, "she lost marks by just writing the answer or partial steps, especially in assessments."

Meanwhile, a senior biology student left assignments until the last minute. This led to rushed note-taking and incomplete reports. The pressure of unfinished tasks lingered into class discussions, making it harder to consolidate concepts and scientific terminology under time constraints.

Recent Achievements

One Lilyfield tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid showing her working now confidently writes out every step and explains her reasoning as she solves trig and algebra problems.

Another high school student, after struggling with quadratic equations, managed to solve for intercepts independently across all question types—a clear turnaround from earlier sessions where she needed significant prompting.

At the primary level, a Year 4 student surprised both himself and his tutor by not only understanding fractions on his first day learning them at school but also improving his timetables since last lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inner Sydney Montessori School, Lilyfield.
