A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. A good tutor should give the confidence and tools for a student to succeed independently. I think I have a strong knowledge of the VCE…

In my experience as a student when my tutors understood my problems and tried to solve them was the thing that stayed with me the longest, also tutors that are your tutors when your studying but friends when you just talk to them. Definitions and basic rules and concepts are very important in order to have a solid foundation. By slowly building up the theory and applying it to problems, students can use logic and reasoning to eventually solve difficult situations. Apart from this, inspiring a genuine interest in the subject is something I value as a tutor. I am extremely…

It's important is to not show the student everything and complete their work for them. Tutoring is about enabling the student to complete work and content by explaining concepts to them so they understand what the question is asking them and explain to the child what the question is asking and then assisting them where they need to succeed. I…

Tutors should be trying different techniques and approaches that better suit that student, and understand the weaknesses of that student to better help…

A tutor can provide much greater flexibility than a teacher in a class room setting. They can identify the specific strengths and weaknesses of a student and cater to them to make the most beneficial learning experience they can. I like to break down mathematical concepts and remove as much of the distracting mathematical language as I can, so…

Sometimes, its not that the student is not able to understand a concept or subject, it just needs to be presented in a different manner. One of the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to support and encourage them academically while also helping them become more self-assured and independent. Creating a supportive learning atmosphere where students feel free to ask questions, make errors, and advance at their own pace is just as important as imparting…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do, other than to further their studies, is to be a role-model of sorts which the students can look up to and be comfortable with. Tutors are not just there to teach, but also be mentors for the students and guide them where need be. I believe that the most significant strength I have is making…

Inside Lower PlentyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex focused on converting between fractions and decimals, along with geometry skills like calculating area and perimeter using diagrams.

In Year 7, Mia practiced algebraic techniques from Chapter 4 of the Edrolo textbook, as well as translating between mixed and improper fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Ethan worked through probability concepts and basic statistical analysis in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In recent Year 8 and Year 11 lessons, incomplete homework has stood out as a key barrier. One student in Year 11 was told, "He will not progress any further in Mathematics unless he tends to his homework," after repeatedly arriving without set work finished—leaving him unable to keep pace with new concepts.

In a Year 8 session, difficulty focusing on multi-step questions led to missed instructions; the tutor noted attention span issues meant extra time was spent re-explaining basic processes instead of building deeper understanding.

The lack of written working and frequent distractions created ongoing gaps in both classes.

Recent Achievements

A Lower Plenty tutoring session saw a Year 10 student who, after struggling with basic addition at first, managed to independently solve algebraic equations by the end of class—a real turnaround in problem-solving skills.

In Year 8, two students who often hesitated to participate began enthusiastically competing with each other to answer percentage questions, showing a new willingness to engage and challenge themselves.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously found fractions confusing was able to calculate them accurately during his first lesson and even explained his method back to the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eltham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lower Plenty Primary School.
