In my perspective, I acknowledge the importance of establishing a sense of comfort between a tutor and a student. If this is established, the student will feel more comfortable asking questions and tend to open up more about themselves; whether it be about the marks they are getting that need improvement or whether they're having a rough time…

Inside Lysterfield SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack worked through algebraic manipulation and the multiplication rules for indices, focusing on practice problems to build fluency.

Year 10 student Emily explored quadratic expressions and equations, including solving by factorisation and using examples from her textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on one-variable statistics—summarising data sets and constructing box plots and histograms using her calculator to interpret real data.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, one student skipped completing all chapter questions and struggled to use the CAS calculator efficiently during timed tasks—"must practice using the calculator to improve timing."

In another VCE context, a student avoided reviewing SAC errors or identifying weak areas, leading to repeated uncertainty in assessments.

A Year 8 learner relied on guessing answers without showing reasoning in worded problems, which left gaps unaddressed.

For a Year 4 maths session, missing focus led to forgotten subtraction steps with carry overs; as one tutor observed, "she tended to forget subtraction with carry overs," causing calculation errors that slowed progress.

Recent Achievements

One Lysterfield South tutor noticed a big change with a Year 10 student who had struggled to connect theory with practice in algebra; now, he's independently rearranging equations and can explain why each step matters, instead of just following along.

In Year 7 maths, another student used to guess at negative number problems but recently started pausing to check her logic before answering—she even asked for more challenging questions last session.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who found fractions confusing is now confidently identifying equivalent fractions on number lines and quickly shaded the correct parts without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Endeavour Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Maranatha Christian School.
