That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide support, build confidence, and foster a positive learning environment. Support is crucial because it helps students feel that they have someone in their corner, guiding them through challenges. Building confidence is also key—when students start to believe in their own…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is talk to them. A tutor should directly ask the student what they are struggling with in class and what they need assistance with. The student should feel comfortable asking the tutor questions about schoolwork. This is important as a tutor provides a student with much more direct and focused…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to encourage a love of learning by helping the student see that they are already intelligent and have the capabilities to excel in their coursework if they apply themselves. Instilling a sense of confidence in students and making the learning process enjoyable is an enormous part of their…

A tutor should be able to provide necessary learning resources for students, feedback and encouragement. A tutor should also be understanding of each student’s skill level and create a stress-free, yet informative learning session that actually tailors to the specific student’s need. Every student should feel that they have the potential to…

I believe a tutor/teacher should always strive to develop an interest about subject matter in the student. Responding and adapting to their learning needs. It is extremely important to be able to tailor to students' needs in tutoring such as adapting the work, demonstrating various ways to explain a skill or method, and even just linking prior knowledge to help the student understand the task better. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build up their confidence and stop them from getting discouraged. I often find that if a student is having difficulties, they stop wanting to succeed in that subject. If you convince them that with a little bit of extra work they'll be doing really well, they often gain confidence…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student depends on the student. For some high-achieving students that are already confident this may mean better grades that allow them to follow a career path they've dreamed of, and for others the confidence a tutor can give them is more useful than any material they have learnt. To inspire and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to really help them get the best out of themselves. Inside MacleodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amanat explored water transport in plants, diving into xylem function and then linking this to atomic theory and basic chemical bonding.

In Year 10, Leah focused on calculating moles using both n=m/M and n=N/Na formulas, practising with worded chemistry problems to build confidence in rearranging equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Amanat reviewed the stages of photosynthesis—light-dependent and light-independent reactions—clarifying inputs and outputs for each step using summary diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, one student left several answer spaces blank during a tutorial, seeking clarification before attempting any response. As the tutor observed, "it will be more valuable for her to first attempt an answer (however imperfect), and then for us to discuss it together." This avoidance of initial attempts may limit exam performance, where immediate feedback isn't available.

In Year 8 Maths, another student often forgot to complete homework tasks—recently missing practice on fractions—which meant less opportunity for targeted feedback and skill consolidation. Hesitation or missed practice translated into gaps during class discussion and revision.

Recent Achievements

One Macleod tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 biology student who, after previously waiting for help when stuck, took initiative by researching answers to her homework independently and arrived at the next session ready to explain what she'd learned.

Meanwhile, a high school chemistry student came prepared with specific questions about practice problems she'd tried solo—something she hadn't done before—which led to more focused discussions together.

In a younger session, one primary student started using diagrams to break down tricky multiple-choice maths problems rather than guessing, helping her confidently eliminate wrong answers herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Macleod College.
