A tutor's job is to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding. That starts with clear explanations, patient encouragement, and adapting to the student's pace. It also means modelling effective study habits and problem-solving strategies, so they can work independently. When students enjoy the process and trust their skills, their results…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should not only help students answer specific questions, but also guide them in developing problem-solving skills and effective ways of thinking. Listening carefully, identifying gaps in understanding, and adapting…

Tutoring is not just about writing formulas on paper and solving equations. Tutoring is about connecting with the student, listening to them and understanding them. Only then a tutor can see what topics the students are struggling with and be able to help them. A tutor can go on and on and on for hours with a lot of knowledge base and high level…

One of the most crucial roles a tutor can play is to ignite a student\'s passion for learning that transcends the confines of textbooks. It\'s about instilling the ability to think critically and creatively, and to explore new ideas independently. The ultimate achievement for a tutor is to witness their students not just absorbing information, but…

Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

As stated in my strengths, taking the time to understand how the student learns. Throwing solutions at someone won't help if you do not provide an explanation they can understand. I believe as well as this, building a decent relationship with the student is important, no one wants to learn from someone they dislike, so being friendly and genuinely…

I believe we as tutors need to understand the student's situation, why they are stuck in a problem or why are they particularly struggling with a topic. Only then, we can try to help them grow and improve step by step along the way. Although I might not have that much experience teaching in a formal tutoring session, I hope I could make students…

Improving a student's perception of the subject, from a hated monster, to an enjoyable and curious endeavour, is a critical and often undervalued element of tutoring. It is crucial that the student walks away from the lesson with a real-world understanding of how what is taught is important to society and our understanding of the universe. Lastly,…

Inside MalabarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas worked through multiplication and division of fractions as well as applying their understanding to perimeter and area in geometry using visual examples.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on solving inequalities and graphing them on number lines, then expanded her skills by practicing shortcuts for multiplying fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James tackled trigonometry concepts alongside bivariate data analysis, with targeted exam prep questions to reinforce application and interpretation of results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer setting out—"Setting out still needs work"—making it harder to catch errors in multi-step maths.

For a Year 10 English task, last-minute communication meant the tutor only learned about an assessment deadline on the day it was due; as noted, "Student has unfortunately relayed information that their assessment was due that very day."

In senior maths (Year 12), anxiety and lack of confidence led to hesitancy in tackling new topics, which left the student feeling overwhelmed rather than progressing steadily through compound interest questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malabar noted that a Year 9 student, who previously hesitated to ask for clarification, is now openly seeking help when confused and has started correcting mistakes independently after feedback.

In a recent high school session, one student showed new independence by recalling formulas from memory and successfully applying them to solve equations without prompts—last term, this same student struggled with remembering steps.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who once rushed through mental maths tasks now takes time to set out work logically and checks each answer before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Sports High School.
