Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

I do think patience, good Communication Skills and the Ability to Make Students Visualise. Also the self-discipline. For one, the number of students working with tutors continues to grow. Two, working 1:1 with students is immensely gratifying, both for the tutor and tutee. And three, a few specific yet generalised characteristics become…

A tutor can make or break a students fervour towards a subject. He can make a concept really easy for students to understand and make confident. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence in the student. It's not just about teaching concepts, but helping the student believe in their own ability to understand and apply them. A good tutor should adapt their methods to suit each students learning style, making lessons clear, engaging, and enjoyable. It's also…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

A tutor must understand a student from within from their thinking style to their work ethic. This is the crux of a tutor's job as understanding this will allow the tutor to provide the right personalised learning approach for the student. Along with that, every tutor must ensure that their student feels confident in their subject as confidence…

I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid imagination can be a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student would be, firstly helping the student develop understandings of the subject at a fundamental level and then building up to a mastery from there. Secondly, being an assistant to help in any task they may deem to difficult to tackle alone, but not doing it for them, instead helping them find the…

I believe having a tutor who presents work in a manageable and stepwise manner is key. many students are embarrassed to admit when they don't understand concepts they may think are simple, or are intimidated by the seeming difficulty of some of the work. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student in primary or high school education is to instill confidence in them to become a curious learner. In order to progress in their academics, students need to feel as though their learning goals are attainable. A tutor can encourage a positive outlook on grades, to foster the belief that…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
