Patience is really important for students. Providing positive feedback, reassurance and encouragement, even if they don't quite understand yet. And finally being approachable and willing to explain something multiple times until they understand. I think my greatest strength as a tutor is my patience. I will happily go over concepts multiple times…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. A can-do attitude is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I myself used to learn concepts in a way that were not theoretical but…

A tutor should make students feel comfortable, build their confidence, and help them truly understand the topic instead of just memorising it. I believe every student learns differently, so being supportive and adapting to their learning style is important. I am patient, friendly, and a good listener. I explain concepts in easy steps and always…

Understanding each and every student is essential as all students don't operate on the same frequency. According to me even though tutoring is taught in class of numerous students, it is more of a one is to one relationship rather than one is to n. Hence, Understanding students and diagnosing them accordingly, with regard to their individual…

To me, teaching is not just about passing the knowledge to students, help them to build an effective learning pattern would be beneficial for them forever and not just limited to math. As a teacher, I can well understand student's logic, therefore we can easily be connected with our ideas. I understand the reason why some questions can be easily…

For a student, a tutor can guide them to the right path and be considerate of their views. Being attentive and respectful to their students is another important thing that every tutor must have. I believe a tutor should always be willing to assist students when they need help with questions, but in particular encourage students to think critically about a topic. For example, giving questions such as: "What happens overall if I change one condition" and to let them build problem solving skills to figure out the corresponding effect. Being…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am currently…

In my opinion, the most critical responsibility of a tutor is not during the teaching phase, but in the phase that comes after the lesson. After learning the theory, the student will begin practising problems related to the topic and it is during this period, that most of the learning takes place. Hence, it is important for tutors to be there to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to constantly support and encourage students during their schooling efforts. I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. Tailoring teaching methods to suit the student's learning style, pace, and preferences ensures a more effective and personalised learning experience. Additionally, beyond academic achievements, a tutor should inspire a passion for learning and promote…

The most important features what a Tutor can do to a Student are a) Give the confidence that he or she can do it, self belief is the most important thing for any person doing any task let alone a student who is starting his/her academic career b) Understand that a students mind/mood will not be same everyday and understand his/her strength…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
